Page 1 of Linux Mint 16!
PCs & Mobiles Forum
It's that time of the year again. :) The Linux Mint 16 RC (release candidate) has been unleashed, and I've got it installed and running right now. As always, I've gone for the Cinnamon 64 bit edition, as I have a relatively decent and well supported graphics card (though somewhat old now - Nvidia 9800GT).
Happy to report that so far this seems to be probably the best Mint I've ever used. So incredibly quick and attractive, and again a doddle to install. Got it all set up very quickly, and am now in the process of adding my games etc. The new Cinnamon desktop is just stunning imho.
I couldn't wait for the final release and had to install it. On early looks I'd say you're safe to do so too. I've not hit any bugs other than one or two dated Desklets not working. Let us know what you think. :)
normally the updating to release from RC is as simple as a normal update, so hopefuly you'll be fine :)
glad you're please with it, no time to play anymore :(

"no time to play anymore :("
Say it isn't so!
I think the nice thing about it is it doesn't require a lot of time to get going. It's a great release so if you do get some time spare I say give it a go. And let us know. :)
Linux Mint any good on (very) old PCs? The type that usually refuses to install any modern Linux distro because of some CPU feature missing?

it's based on ubuntu, so how old are we talking? there's a 32bit version as well as 64 bit. they do an xfce version if you want a less hoggy WM/DE.
works on my Dell D610 laptop which is pretty old by modern standards (came with XP)
Installed 17.1 cinnamon but not used it yewt.
Rob, I just saw at http://distrowatch.com/ there's a new release of Antix, which is an XFCE debian based distro aimed at older PCs, so you should find the kernel has old stuff in it. it's a livecd as well as installable so you can give it a go.
Dsl (Damn small Linux) and Puppy are the most obvious ones to me which keep old kernels for old hardware.
Ooh ta, I have a very old Sony laptop which is the only physical machine I run Linux on. Not at home atm so I can't check what I'm currently running on it...
Always on the look out for something else though.

I tried Antix earlier this week and it's great! Runs nicely on the old laptop, but best of all it just works well with the touchpad, I didn't have to spend ages trying to work out how to get it to feel remotely right.
Also easily installed the few apps I needed.
Thanks admars!
