Laptop deals

RJS (undefined) posted this on Sunday, 17th June 2012, 10:23

Looking for a new laptop for dad, this looks a solid deal:

Anything bad about it I`m missing? Are HP no good? Is it overpriced?

Quick look around and that does look like a good deal, assuming he just wants it for internet and the like should last a few years. Integrated Intel graphics, should be ok for most video watching, but as you  know, not much good for games

Seen a few HP laptops, i wouldn`t buy a desktop but their laptops seem pretty good, company I used to work for used them for a bit but switched to Lenovo, I don`t know why they switched before I joined, but we found a few in the server room, and they worked ok, despite having been used a lot as proper portable machines.

Rebuilt a couple of them and despite being old they still had drivers on their website.

I`ve not used that shop, but have heard good things about them.

Never known them to be, always been reasonably reliable and pretty decent customer support.
Might be worth trying to find those staff linked direct from HP sites that they sell to most, I got carts for mum`s printer that way, high capacity colour and b/w set for a tenner delivered, got a case for the touchpad for a tenner too.
I know they do printers there, not sure about laptops, worth a look though.

Can`t answer that, been out of the game too long and would be here asking you guys still "into" it before I did the same LOL.

HP were always decent, when they bought over Compaq they took what was another reasonable quality company and made it a bit better too.
Personally wouldn`t hesitate on a brand basis but they do tend to ship a fair bit of the usual "on board" software crap so maybe need a clean install. Drivers are usually a doddle to find (I just did a Compaq laptop of around 8 to 10 years old with no issues finding on site) within their support site so shouldn`t be any reall hassles for you.

Spotted the Win 8 upgrade for £15 too, can`t be a bad option even if it`s just for a bit of future proofing.

Found that link but doesn`t seem to do laptops :-/

However, I`m not up on spec but if an AMD dual core processor is enough for him they have one listed for £370 with 6 gig RAM and 640 Gb hard drive on this page:
http://h40059.www4.hp.com/uk/homelaptops/index.php
Direct to the laptop: http://h40059.www4.hp.com/uk/homelaptops/product.php?id=A9X35EA&experience=direct
Also a deal for another tenner with a basic printer (good for a backup or maybe to sell on and get a wee bit money back?)

Other laptops there too but the one you linked initially is on the site at £500 but not for sale so must be a model in the process of replacement.....?

Cheers guys, don`t want an AMD I`m a bit biased against them. :/

Glad it looks good to more than just me, wanted a quick opinion in case someone had horror stories to tell. :)

Looks like a decent laptop.
I`d still be tempted to spend £60 and put a 120GB SSD in there to replace the HDD. That would make it super speedy and would last many years.

Rob, well personally speaking i`d never buy another HP if it was the last one on earth, I had a HP Pavillion series laptop a few years ago, it ran for about 13 mnths then it would start "losing" audio saying "no drivers installed" - then would come back after a reboot then dissapear without warning, then the on board cd drive would drop off the device list then return, the wifi would also be sporadic in operation - after much frustration i found a HP forum that showed HP had a massive problem with Pavillion laptops using a certain graphics chip, insufficient heat sinking and overheating of said chipset (and the use of enviromentally safe solder) would cause the pcb to delaminate and the solder to "lift" from areas of the chip causing all the aformentioned problems (and a few others) - its well documented and the only cure was either a new "modified" motherboard (at a cost that far outweighed the cost of the device) or 3rd party removal and re-balling of the chipset and a new modified heatsink.

Now i`m well aware crap happens when manufacturing devices but my frustration was the fact HP would not under any circumstances admit they had a problem, emails were ignored and their own tech advice and forums would "suggest" you do a reinstall or it it was a windows os update fault - infact anything other than hold their hands up and fix the problem.

In the end i broke it down for bits and sold them on ebay - in fact a company that does the specific fault repair bought the mobo off me to refurbish!

Having said all that my daughter turned up with a HP for me to look at the other day and it looked on the surface a nice machine (but then so did mine..)

I just want to deal with companies that have some kind of morals when they know they have a problem and i vote with my feet and wallet - maybe a futile gesture for a company as big as HP but they sure as hell wont be getting anymore of my cash (oh and dont get me started on Halfords and TomTom!)

I will dig out the main link for the HP forum thread on the whole saga a bit later - its interesting reading insomuch as the HP moderators steer you towards it being everyone elses fault except hp - and if you have the time just google "hp pavillion no audio device installed"

#Edit - link for the main thread - strangely i checked my spam email account and found 3 new posts on the same subject!
