Apple confirms iPad 3 launch event for March 7

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 28th February 2012, 20:50

It will need to be phenomenal to get me to buy one now.
There was a time I would have bought one, but that time has now pasted.

Make it drag & drop & add a sd card slot & I might bite....

It`s never going to be drag and drop Pat.
And I very much doubt they`ll ever allow storage expansion by SD card.

I`m very fond of my iPad 1, but it was sufficiently expensive that I wouldn`t really consider a replacement yet.  That said, an SD slot (even with limited functionality - just pictures, music and documents) would be a mind-changer.

I can not express how much i dislike itunes.

I have a ipod classic.
The only reason I use an ipod is because it lets me store every mp3 i own. (124gbs)
If I could find another large capacity good quality mp3 player, I`d switch

But I have spent soooo much time restoring the audio because itunes throws a spanner in the works & something stops working, like playlists or album art or all the podcasts have disappeared or video playback stopped working, or whatever, & the quickest way to fix it is to reset/restore (whatever apple call it) to get it to work again.

Guessing, I`d say in the last two years I`ve had to reset the ipod & least 8 times.

Because there is a lot of audio to sync, it takes many many hours to do.

Every time its happened I`ve sworn I would switch to another software to use the ipod, but the truth is, when it does work, syncing new podcasts & new mp3s using itunes is quick & simple.
But every time I have had to reset it has made me really hate itunes.

Now I know the ipad doesn`t have the internal capacity of an ipod, but it would mean using the software even more than I do now.

As for the SD card slot.
Well, you can buy a class 10 16gb sdhc card for under £10 (Link)
Apple charge an extra £100 for the increase in size of an ipad2 16gb & an ipad2 32gb.
I`m sorry, but that is taking the p**s.

I also think its a very disrespectful way to treat the loyal customers that Apple have in that way.
It`s almost like saying "If they are stupid enough to pay that much, lets charge them as much as we like".

Did you see the newspaper report a few months ago about how much the iphone costs to make?
I don`t have the article to hand, but the total cost of making an iphone was about £110.
The battery cost less than a fiver.
For a mobile that sells for £500.
So they can`t even put a decent battery in a iphone when they clear hundreds on each handset.
And can you think of any other mobile costing more than £30 that doesn`t have a micro sdhc card slot?
Yet this £500 doesn`t.

I know it sounds like I have a real problem with Apple products but I don`t.
I have a problem with the way they treat their customers.
That`s why I`m not one of them as far as a tablet PC or mobile phone is concerned.

But I am their kind of target customer.
I own a desktop PC, laptop PC, tablet PC, smart phone, TV media player, ect ect.
All products that Apple sell.
But not one of those items I just listed that I own is made by Apple.
And I can`t see that I ever would buy Apple made hardware, unless I had no choice.

Will they make me change my mind next Wednesday?
I doubt it, but who knows....

I thought with the latest iOS all syncing is done wirelessly now? That said I agree that iTunes can sometimes be VERY annoying when it decides to screw up syncing.

That obviously doesn`t include software development costs, that said I`m not sure it quite makes it up to £500. But then you also have to take into account R&D on the hardware, though again there is a reason Apple are one of the richest companies in the world.

And you think that`s cheap for a battery? :) It`s probably quite expensive for what it is! And afaik Apple stuff tends to have the best battery life in general.

I agree that what Apple charge for extra memory is expensive, though I think the sort of ram they use is more SSD style than cards. So it`s not quite a fair comparison there.

What I`m looking forward to about the iPad 3 is the high resolution display, I`ll probably get the cheapest 3G one they do, because I`m pretty sure memory wise I`m unlikely to fill it. It`s going to be an expensive web browser, pdf reader and coach gaming fun for me, with the 3G as a backup for the rare occasion my internet goes down.

I really want one because I spend quite a few hours of a weekend on my laptop, and for browsing the web and reading pdfs, I think I`d be much better off (and more comfortable) doing it on an ipad.

Besides, I have a tower workstation, a tower games PC, an arcade cabinet PC, a HTPC, a music studio PC, a ultra small laptop (pre-netbook era) and a decent laptop, it`s time I got something tablety to keep them all company.

Never had a problem with iTunes on the MAC. But on a PC I wouldn`t go down that route again.

you`re quite right, I just looked on the uk apple website. The only model size wise was the 8gb iphone4 which costs £429 + p&p

I`ve got a 32gb micro sd card in my phone, the card cost me under £20.

How big does the iphone memory go up to? & how much more will apple charge for the increased size?
As there was no other size for sale I don`t know how much extra it costs for a larger size built in memory.
But as its apple, lets say one arm & one (or maybe even two) legs.

Everyone I know who has an iphone moans about the battery life.
Not just a problem for apple users, most smartphones have so many things running in the background that I`ve never come across a smart phone that could be used & not need charging at best every other day, at worse more than once a day.

I was always keen to try a tablet with 3G, now I have one I would never buy another tablet without 3G.
Pre-paid data sim cards are pretty cheap, although the price has jumped up £10 for the 6 months cards lately, just as I`m about to need to buy a new one.
They are still under £30 for 6 months at 3GB data a month (18gb total)
I use the bbc iplayer & watch youtube videos all the time on mine.
I`ve never got close to using up the 3gb, but I use my wi-fi when at home.

Apple haven`t actually said they`re launching the iPad3.  Just something you might want to touch.  For all we know they might be about to launch those iPhone branded gas rings the Chinese police seized the other day.

Haven`t seen the rumours, or heard any, but if this statement is accurate couldn`t it even be something like a touch-screen Mac being launched?
Or weren`t there rumours that after the reaction to the iPhone 4S the 5 was imminent?

That said, I have been hearing more about a third Gen iPad than any other product but I`m open to whatever :D

Oh, and if they do launch a 3rd gen pad maybe the others will finally reach "normal" pad pricing levels ;)

RJS- I am surprised how quick I filled my 16gb Ipad.

When EA where doing games for 59p I added a few just to test and most of them are over 1gb and I actually had to delete some without playing.

Speakers are suprisingly decent aswell so I use it as my music player around the house.

Probably could do with a 32gb, but I got mine as a "works one", so got 16gb refurb from Apple for £359 but effectively cost me £180.

Not sure on Wireless syncing. Mine doesn`t, but now you have said that I probably need to look into that.
