Ethernet cables

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Friday, 24th June 2011, 19:03

Is there such a thing as an ethernet cable with detachable `ends`?
Why? Cos I need to stick a cable through a hole in the wall to connect the TV to the router in the room next door. I can`t make the hole bigger (BTW, the cable for the virgin box also comes through here). I don`t want to spend £60 on a Sony dongle so how can I get the cable through the hole when the `end` is too chubby to get through?

Crimping tool with some RJ45 connectors?...
Never seen anything `detachable`.

Or buy a couple of those home networking things that plug into a mains socket in each room. I think Ogs might be the right man to point you to some of them cos there`s multiple types of them and something is telling me he bought or researched some not too far in the past....

I`d do as SJ suggests and get a crimping tool (with some RJ45 connectors).
Using `standard` sized patch cables it`s pretty easy to crimp. (The ultra-thin/flat cables are a real pain in the arse though).
Firstly take a note of the layout of the cable (the colour ordering) so you can re-do it as it was (it`s likely to be a straight-through setup, see here for the details: http://www.incentre.net/content/view/75/2/).

Then cut the end off as close to the connector as you can, strip back the outer plastic to expose around 15mm of the strands of cables, line them up in the order they need to be and cut them so they`re in a straight line so that you have around 10mm of strands left in a nice line, feed it in to the empty RJ45 connector making sure that each one goes in to its own hole...then crimp it.

my crimping tool has a "stop" to ensure that you only crop off the required
amount of outer shielding. think they cost me £20 a few years back, so they`re
probably about £10 now.

as for crimping your own.... get a decent bag of RJ45`s and practice a few times.
it`s surprisingly easy to **** up a cable because you`ve crimped it and one or two
of the 8 inner wires hasn`t made a connection!!

On a related note, does anyone know where I can buy a thing that holds the wires before you push it into the RJ45 connector? I don`t know what its called but I know it exists! It`s like a small clamp.
