BT Infinity Service (aka Fibre to the Cabinet - FTTC).
Hi all
Not sure if everyone is aware that replacing your existing ADSL broadband service with BT Infinity means you will likely need a new wireless router (if you use one now of course) - unless you actually have BT as your ISP as they will give you a new BT Homehub.
The new DSL standard that BT will use for FTTC is VDSL...I`m fairly confident saying that all existing ADSL modems can not be upgraded to support VDSL.
BT (or whoever the ISP is) will supply a separate Openreach modem (which requires a power socket). This will have an ethernet connection so you can feed that into another router`s uplink port.
I`m told that the latest BT Homehub (v2) has ethernet port 4 reserved for that reason. So they haven`t yet produced an integrated box.
I hate having to have 2 separate boxes when one should be able to do the job, so this has annoyed me a bit.
I`m sure eventually (when demand is high enough) the Netgear/Belkin etc. guys will produce an all in one router, but I would have thought that BT would supply one at least.
Hope that info is of use to someone!

Haven`t got it as yet, but they say I can go from 16 to 40 Mb .

Got this installed 2 weeks ago.
I was on ADSL2+ and i live milesaway from the exchange so my line stats have never been great, here is an example
Upstream 923900
Downstream 3851900
Elapsed Time 0 day 0 hr 21 min 3 sec
SNR Margin(Upstream) 5.5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.45 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 31.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 59.0 dB
So, the max I could achieve was just under 4meg down and just under 1 up.
After fibre, my speeds are excess of 38 meg down and 9 up. Downloading at 4.8MB/s
The first thing to say is, if you choose BT as your provider, simply put...you are mad. Their allowances compared with others is a joke. Check out acquiss or IDnet, I can vouch for ID net as am with them and service is great. Am paying £35 a month with a 250gb monthly cap.

Oh and dont sweat it if you dont have 2 power sockets near your master phone socket. They will provide a data extension kit and this will allow you to put both devices whereever u like.

My work pay for my BT business broadband connection, so allowances aren`t really an issue.
But I just don`t like the idea of having to have separate boxes when I`m so used to one box (ADSL router) doing it all (so to speak).

@Miles
The openreach hub they give you is pretty small and discreet, really wouldnt let it put you off, is a piece of p*** to setup.

Setup isn`t an issue for me (I`m a fairly technical guy ;))
Like I said, it`s just having to have yet another box plugged in.

FTTC doesn`t mean a hell of a lot. I thought when I switched up to Virgin Media XXL they`d be rewiring with fibre optic, but the "cabinet" can be at the other end of the street or further away and the last cable run is still bog standard copper coax. Still, bombing along at 50Mb/sec with an upload rate of 1.5Mb/sec.
