Changing page file size?

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 28th May 2008, 21:50

Trying to play a game demo, everything`s unpacked but when I try to run it I get a warning saying The page file size is too small. (Has to be 2gb ).

Novice at games without instructions (downloaded demo (Stalker)) so any help would be hot

WTF?! A 2GB page file?!
How much RAM do you have in the machine?

If you have to change it and are not sure how....
In XP (I assume) ...The page file can be manually set through the system properties..
Right click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop (if you have it, otherwise go to control panel, and choose "System")
Then go to the advanced tab, and in the first section labelled "Performance" press the "Settings" button.
On the new screen that appears, go to the advanced tab again.
At the bottom you will see the Virtual Memory section - that`s what you`re looking for.

This was interesting (and the same issue you have):

I still think its outrageous that a game should demand 2GB of free mem (or page file) to run.

if you`ve seen any vids of the game running I think you`ll see why it needs so much.

Changed the size, just going to start the demo and hide behind the sofe, in case my PC explodes

I remember it getting mega hyped several years ago, screen shots super realistic etc, and they had loads of cool original ideas for the game, but I think most of those got cut out over the years and it got lost as "just another PC FPS"

it`s on 82% at gamerankings so should be pretty good.

STALKER is brilliant. It did pretty well and was probably the best FPS in the last few years.

Stanz, post your system specs as the problem is almost certainly lack of system resources.

well. loaded up ok. but managed to get about 0.0005fps. got into options and dropped everything down to minimum. now won`t load. starting to think it`s not worth the bother

Try running pagedefrag, it might help. It`s no use having a huge pagefile if it`s in hundreds of pieces.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

I always put the unzipped folder in C:\program Files, you have to navigate to it manually as it doesn`t have an installer. It can take a very long time and runs on reboot. Just as long as there is still hard drive activity it`s still working. Be prepared for an hour or more if it`s very fragmented. I have mine set to run at each boot which stops it ever being a problem.

I once worked on a very unstable machine with a 768Mb pagefile in just over 1500 fragments, average size 500Kb, poor PC couldn`t do anything without crashing, one run of pagedefrag and it was fixed.
