Problem trying to restore a PC?

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 2nd February 2008, 14:55

Hello,

I have an older PC which i am going to restore and give to someone, it is full of viruses so i was just planning to scrub it and restore WinXP.

If i try to update it, it wont let me do it because the older copy of winXP has a different serial number and wont accept the new. I have set it up in the Bios to boot off the DVD drive first but when it loads up and tells me to press any button to boot off the drive, it skips it and goes to the bit where you get the option to boot to the best last know configuration or go into safe mode...etc. But i cant move to any of these options when i press on the keyboard.

I am using my wireless keyboard from my new PC on this old PC, when i press F2 at the beginning, it lets me into the bios but not select the other options as i have said.

Do you think its maybe the Keyboard?.....if it lets me into the bios, it should be working when pressing a key to boot off the drive? plus it also works when it boots into windows.

Apart from taking the drive out and putting it into my other PC to scrub it.....is there any other options i could try.

Cheers!

Scrub the HDD using a DBan floppy disc.

As for the keyboard, try a wired one during the setup (wireless shouldn`t make a difference IMO - I use one at work with a KVM, to cut down on cable tangle)

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

I hate answering the phone at work - It disturbs my sleep.

Thanks for the replies!

I ended up just spending a bit of time cleaning up all the viruses and spyware....running a lot better now.

Cheers!

On your windows xp do an XP REPAIR (not the console R option).. You have to use your new xp disk to do this. This will over write the files that are stopping your new serial number and allow it to be used.

Had a similar problem with my keyboard the other week, getting into bios etc was fine but pressing any key to boot from cd wasn`t working.

Borrowed a wired one from work and all was ok.
