Ram/vista question??

1mills (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 3rd June 2007, 10:05

My mum`s had a new computer from Dell a while back and when she was telling me the specs I said that 512mb would be fine for what she`s going to use it for (mainly playing music, browsing internet etc).

Now I don`t really know anything when you start getting into specifics but thought it would be okay, but I forgot it`s come with Vista pre-installed and it seems to run quite slowly even doing basic things.

Is it worth another 512memory or will I be better off getting her a 1gb one (about extra tenner), so if it needs upgrading again we can just get another 1gb one?

Seems a bit excessive for what she will use it for but really have no idea how much Vista uses or anything like that.

Or is there a way I can make Vista run faster by turning off a load of the s***e that she will never use? It`s also got Mcafee preinstalled, with 3year license I think, but I think that`s also contributing to slowdown. Is it any better than having AVG free?

Vista needs a bare minimum of 1gb to run decently. If all she does is email/www/word processing, that`ll be fine.

But if you think she may do more in the future (video editing perhaps, or the odd game), then definitely plan ahead and leave yourself the option of upgrading to 2gb at a later date.
