Reinstalled windows but can`t change display settings- help needed

1mills (Elite) posted this on Monday, 21st May 2007, 12:16

Right, my computers been knackered and I`ve just reinstalled windows but the display settings set on ridiculous and I can`t change them.

I`m trying to search for a solutions but because I`ve only got 15inch monitor the display is far too zoomed in and it`s taking me ages to try and scan through google and to try and read anything as I`m having to scroll sideways aswell on every page to see the end of the sentence :/

I must point out that I am a complete retard when it comes to this kind of stuff so I need pretty basic instructions, if anyone can push me in the right kind of direction.

Hi

It just sounds as though your graphics card has not installed correctly. Do you have the disk it came with? If so, stick that in and install the basic drivers to get yourself up and running. You can then search for the latest drivers once you have selected the resolution you want.

Thanks

Nick

Cheers, now this is where I prove how much of a muppet I am.

Is there anyway I can tell what graphics card I have got? I may have the cd somewhere at my mums house in storage but that`s in Llandudno and I`m in Liverpool.

From searching around I would "guess" I`ve got Intel extreme so I thought I`ll just try installing that but when I`ve gone to their website it says it is unavailable to download as the drivers are on the Xp cd.

I`ve just had a scan on the cd I`ve got, but it`s not the normal disc it`s a Dell one for reinstalling windows. It also says on the front of the cd

"This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers."

Dunno if stating the obvious will help, so apologies if this is timewasting:

Right click the mouse on your desktop
Select Properties from the menu options listed
Click on the 5th option - Settings

From this screen you can adjust the screen resolution using a slide bar and you can click on Advanced for more info about your graphics card if you need to.

Yeah, can`t change any settings in there.

I`m guessing the driver isn`t installed, because it says Vgasave when I`m in properties which I guess is the an absolute minimum default or something.

Right click on `my computer` > `properties` > `hardware` tab > `device manager` button.

Take a look and see if it gives the type of card you have in there. If not and it is intergrated graphics which motherboard or Dell PC do you have? Their website might have the drivers.

If it is a seperate card, open up the case and find out what it is.

Cheers

Nick

Cheers for help, I think I`ve sorted it now.

The wireless started dropping out as soon as I sorted it which I`m guessing was a coincidence, but I had to get on with revising as I was spending far too much time on my computer already :/
