ok so i have found out i need a ethernet card but i am unsure if they are universal or weather i need to buy a specific one.
i assume i can just fit it into a spare slot on the back of my p.c (can anyone confirm this please ie do i need any leads?)
and will be paying aroun 5-10 pound

all this sound about right?....

u will need pci ethernet card

although sounds hard but its actually very easy

you need to open up your pc and check if you have a spare pci slot
if there is a pci ethernet card will only cost you £5 at most
then slot it in
if you are running xp/vista, Im sure it will detect straight away ready for use
but if you are not, you need to install the driver which might get tricky but works

cokie enjoy

Hold off for a week or two and I`ll try to find the LAN cards I had before I left Currys.
You can have it for the postage, it`s a 10/100 standard PCi Ethernet controller blah blah blah.

Think it comes with drivers but I`m sure a couple of peeps on here could find them if need be ;)

Found one of them :)
And it`s the one without a box lolol

Basically, it`s brand new unopened, just the outer box was removed to put it on display.
Don`t know if its a high enough spec for the 360 so over to everyone else for that point.

Link to the support FAQ at Netgear:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?question_box=fa310tx&collections=kb_file%2Cdatasheets&ui_mode=question&collection_restriction=kb_file

It`s a Netgear FA310TX and it comes with a driver on floppy disc :D
(driver and new firmware also available via that support FAQ link)

No cable included with them, so that`d be your lookout.
Total weight: about 160g so that should let you work out the postage from the Royal Mail site if you wannit.
Lemme know, otherwise it`s on Ebay by the weekend ;)

huh,,, oh right, k, i`ll read the thread tbh, i just saw your name & posted lol. sorry OP :)

righto, well, tbh i`m amazed a 5 year old packard bell hasn`t got an ethernet socket :o but that aside, as has been said before fitting a standard pci ethernet card is easy peasy, on a normal pc you just pop the side off & (usualy just 2 screws, from the right hand side of the pc, as you are looking at it from the back) once you can see inside the pc, you will see some white sockets, they will look like strips & will be the same lenght as the socket on the ethernet card you will be holding, ready to fit. push the blanking plate out next to the pci socket your about to use & plug the ethernet card in, you may need 1 screw, but many packard bell pc`s are screwless & have a lillte plate or slider, this will be obvious to you when you look at it so it`s nothing to worry about.

newer packard bell pc`s use standard atx style cases, almost all of which open the way i described, however older ones tended to use proprietry cases, that had different methods of entry, usualy just a push pannel, then a slider, if you could post the model of pc you got i`ll look it up for you & update the fitting bit i wrote :)

as you say the pc is 5 years old i`m working on the assumption you are using XP in this case, as allready said, drivers will be found within xp 99% of the time, but any card you get will include drivers if required. just rember to run the network setup wizard & let it send the internet to the card whaen it asks you what you want to connect (it makes sense when you do it ;) )

now, onto the 360 bit, any ethernet card will do, but i have a couple of questions about your isp, i`m assuming your on broadband ? if so, you should have either a cable modem, or an adsl modem ? either of these can usualy be connected to your 360, & if you connect via the modem you bypass the need to have the pc switched on whenever you want to use xbox live :) (but it makes file sharing a little more difficult)

hope this helps..
