how do I stop internet from disconnecting after few minutes away?

dakwah (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 30th July 2006, 15:58

If I leave the computer for a few minutes and click onto new site it asks if I want to work offline or to reconnect. How do I keep it permanently on until I log out manually?

thanks

It was ok until I had to reinstall a graphics driver and go back to a restore point of about 1 month.

The pc is still not behaving but at least I can use it

thanks, but can`t locate the settings through any of the menus. It seems do disconnect when idle randomly. Have been away for 5 min and it asks me to reconnect and also been away for an hour without having to reconnect. Strange. The wireless signal is strong so can`t be that.

My pc does that too, if I go off to make a coffee or spend maybe 10 minutes writing a long post here when I click `submit` I get the notice that Im offline and do I want to reconect..strange as Im on an `always connected` NTL broadband ..Im not running any wireless networks or anything fancy like that..just a bog standard cable moden plugged into my USB

...I cant find the setting to change the `idle time` either...

Open Internet Explorer
Tools
Internet Options
Connections
Highlight Connection (Ntl, etc)
Settings
Advanced
Check not ticked

Probably an easier way, but that is one way.
Good luck.

I used to be on NTL dialup and was always disconnected if I wasn`t "active" for more than a minute or too.. its their way of getting rid of you if they think you`re not busy. I fixed it with a program called Connection Keeper which pings the server every few seconds and basically pretends that you`re still active. Sounds like their broadband is just as bad.

must elaborate.

I also have a laptop connected wirelessly with no problem, but its my desktop which has the issue.

Also it asks me on a regular basis after switching on `network connection detected` and ask me to connect. Well there is only mine around my house so why does it keep askin as there is no choice? So I just connec to get online, so real problem but annoying especially when it drops the connection as well.
