Windows XP messenger problem !

richardbradley66 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 28th May 2006, 20:50

I have installed messenger 7.5 and its absolutely fine. However, i thought i was offline until someone sent me a message!

This is because i WAS offline on the new version, but windows seems to have a messenger built in to it, that runs in the background as soon as you boot up !
Is there anyway i can delete/uninstall/overide this "automatically" booting up ?

Basically with the new messenger letting me sign in as "appear offline", i dont need the windows messenger whatsoever so would be happy to get rid. Can anyone help ?

Richie.

I thought that the windows messenger was overwritten by MSN (?) Mine certainly was.

Are you using Win Xp Service pack 2?...because when u install that, it automatically deletes windows messenger...otherwise go to control panel==>add/remove programs==>and on the left you should see a tab called add/remove windows components..click on it...keep moving down the list untill you see windows messenger and take the tick off it and click next.. hopefully this helps

What is happening is that your Windows Messenger service is active. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger. Windows Messenger is an instant messaging service and unscrupulous individuals (of whom I prefer to call them 5 star
d??kheads) will use it to send spam.

To stop the service you need to go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services then highlight Messenger. Right click Messenger, then select Properties and click on the Stop button.

If you are getting messages from the previous version of MSN Messenger then simply go into that version of MSN Messenger goto Tools then Options, select General and untick the boxes to auto run when logged on to Windows and auto sign in.
