another silly question,,,,,,,

but if i`m just getting stuff over my ftp source (remote server in the states) i can easily max my full 10 meg conection out, but if i start azureus, no matter how little i`m downing from the torrent (say 5k up & 5k down) the ftp slows right down or stops completely, i`m talking 1k :/

is it a port conflict or something like that ? or is it just bottlnecking because of the amount of connections from different sources.

i also tried it with Utorrent, & the result is the same :(

i could really do with sorting this out so if theres a "fix" i`d be extremely greatfull :)

Bit of a nearly expert at comms(i.e. not that good) but your up speed will only be a fraction of your line speed e.g if you have a 2Mb download speed, you may only have a 128Kb upload speed, which equates to about 15KB transfer capacity.

So if your using say 10K on bittorrent this will only leave a max. of 1-5K for FTP. This doesn`t account for system overheads (non-useful data packets, ACK/NACK data) and all that jazz that goes with FTP.

Don`t think it`s a port conflict. Azureus uses ports in the 4000 range (if you use the defaults). FTP is port 21.

i`m on 10 meg, if i just use the remote ftp server i hit 900+ kbps minimum, but if i launch 1 or 2 torrents the ftp speed drops nearly to a standstill, even though i`ll only be getting say 20kbps down & 20kbps up on the torrent client (my upload is also limited to 40kbps on torrents)

so i`m afraid that can`t be the answer :( but thanks for the reply ;)

+ my bandwidth monitor confirms the overall speed drop, i can however still transfer at full speed ovet local ftp.

Are you sure it is not your ISP packet shaping. I have just moved from Pipex for them doing this. Despite their claims of it only being applied to higher users, and it not affecting overall bandwidth, it has now been applied to all users who use P2P and despite their claims as soon as you open up P2P they throttle your entire bandwidth. When I spoke to them the lady on the phone insisted that they do not know anything about packet shaping, but they do have a fair usage policy.

Check to see if your ISP has a fair use policy. If they do then the chances are that your only option is to try one that does not. I am moving to Evolution dsl - 8mb, static IP, no packet shaping £25 a month.

ntl catagoricaly stated to me (over the phone) that they do not use any form of packet shaoing & they no longer enforce a cap on home users, only business regustered users hage to pay extra if they go over there gigage, it turned out to be a problem at my friends end, he deleted my account then re-set it up with all the same settings etc & it came back up fine :) & tbh, unless ntl started doing the above mentioned things i would never leave them, because cable technology is simply much better & generally a lot more reliable

Agree with sj where he told you in the other thread to slow your upload.
What is the max upload speed of your connection r8sso 256kbps , 484kbps ? limit the torrent client to around 60 - 70 % of your upload speed and see if it makes any difference.

no, tbh i never got it sorted, so i just pause my torrents when using the ftp server, it`s no big deal realy cos i can get my stuff from the ftp server so fast i only need to pause the torrents for around an hour.

BUT i`ll give you a little advice regards your problem, most of it`s allready been covered by the post above, but i`ll put it in my own words & tell you how i work it.

firstly, whats your connection speed & who is your isp ?

in my case i`m with NTL using there 10meg service, & if we`re speaking stricktly about torrents, then i`ll generally limit my upload speed to around 50kbps, (roughly 65kbps being the max on ntl`s with around 8 actice connections (some downloading some seeding) i`ve seen the overall download speeds hit 900+kbps whilst maintaining a constant seeding speed of 50kbps, but if there are a lot of active connections i`ll drop the upload speed to 40kbps, dunno why this makes a difference but it does (i`m sure one of the more thechnical bods will be able to explain it, & it`s probably a bottleneck or some such) i also drop the upload speed down all the way to 20kbps if i`m surfing the web, this is more relevent to your problem, & tbh once again i don`t know why IE & FireFox require more access to the upload speeds but it does make a difference whilst surfing, for instance i can be downloading at 1meg a second via ftp yet because i`m not uploading anything it "barely" affects my browsing :/

on a side note has anybody noticed anything wierd with NTL over the last couple of weeks ? i keep hitting download speeds of 1.5meg a second (frequently via ftp & also from M$ downloads) & thats almost double my supposed capacity !!! then it`ll drop to around 900kbps which is more the norm with the ftp server i use, anybody know if ntl are upping there speeds again ready for the onslaught of 24meg adsl 2.0 ?

is that a 3meg service ? (a 2 meg service generally maxes out @ around 250-280kbps, tho my old 2 meg ntl conection was a bit flakey in that i could very often hit & stay @ 300kbps) if thats the case then your "operative" max upload speed should be around 33kbps so your 15kbps limit should be just fine in regards to stopping it bottlenecking, HOWEVER some torrent sites limit your download speeds to relate to you upload speed, especialy if you have a poor/bad ratio. if you want pm me with details of the sites you use & i`ll have a look to see if they are capping you. another thing you could try to "properly" test your download speed, go here M$ start downloading the demo, let it download for a minute & see what speeds you get, it`s a better indication than a normal bandwidth test as it lets you see the settled speed of the connection, i just tried it & i hit 600+kbps so it should easily hit the peak of your connection.
