Multiregion dvd drive for Inspiron 6000

Dell use various manufacturers for their drives.
For example, I have the D600 (as does my colleague). I have a Sony drive, he has a Samsung. Both look identical, but the drive info tool shows the difference.
The Samsung can not be made multi-region (trust me I`ve tried), my Sony one can :D
Download and run this tool to confirm what drive you have.

you can try new firmware, but`s finding the right one for your drive.
the best way is either dvd region free or anydvd, they are software based and will make your dvd drive play and record any region, plus they also make any dvd you play unencrypted, i have used both. anydvd on my laptop and dvd region free on my pc, and had no problems with either.
you can buy either on ebay, just look under software, costs about £10.00 for the software.

how about using videolan to watch your dvds ? I think that plays dvds while bypassing the region encoding

I tried DVD region free on the (Samsung) D600 laptop. Completely messed up the drive. Wasn`t seen in Windows at all after that. Had to do a system rebuild to resolve it :D
Loads of people love it...personally I won`t be using it again.

I use DVD Region Killer (v2.7) with my LG drive - available here
