Norton Ghost

Riggs (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 21st January 2006, 14:09

I backed up my system to an external USB drive using Norton Ghost 2003 a couple of weeks ago. I now want to do a new backup. Is it possible for Ghost to check the current image and only backup the changes which have taken place or do I need to make a completely new backup?

Thanks for any help

Of course I could be wrong but I don`t believe it can do any form of incremental backup. Norton isn`t really a backup tool - it is used to create disk images. Having said that, you can selectively retreive files. Fairly sure 2003 can`t do what you`re asking though..

Incremental backups are available in Norton Ghost but I have recently ditched it for Paragon`s Exact Image where a full version is available in this month`s Computer Shopper. It is more stable and has a more intuitive user interface. Another good feature is that it gives the user the option to erase disks that have data in them if you wish to re-use them in the backups.

Mike

thanks for the heads up re: Paragon Exact Image.

i was planning on getting ghost in the next couple of weeks, but seeing
as there is a "free" imaging tool available, i think i`ll use that.

one question though, is it possible to create an image of my laptop
hdd and save it onto server 2003, then carry out a network installation
afterwards?

thanks in advance.

STE,

Do you mean perform an image onto a Windows Server 2003 machine and then restore over a network? I havn`t got access to the equipment to try it here but I can`t see why not. I have performed an image over a network onto a Windows XP installed machine here at home.

Mike

yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

i know i`d be able to create a disk image (onto removeable media) and
be able to install from that, but i also want to be able to do an
unattended network installation.

i`ll go and get the mag and have a go!!

thanks again.

Hi Mike,
could you let us now how to do the incremental backups in Ghost. I`m living in Austria so don`t have access to the mag you`re on about, and my copy of Ghost is in German as well.

Cheers

I ditched ghost, arconis will do what you want, though you have to do full drive backup first, also program i also use a great program for backing up files and folders, for my photos and files, think it might do full backups as well though havent go into to much as. i have arconis, You could probably use in conjuction. like i do

Well there you go, I didn`t think the incremental feature was implemented until later on - when they bought PowerQuest.
