Should I renew Norton Internet Security?

Bryen22 (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 5th December 2005, 21:48

My Norton Internet Security is up for renewal but is it worth it? Having had success with Firefox and Open Office - I`d like views on using Zonealarm free and a free AV like AVG or AVAST.

Bryen22 :)

I have used Norton Internet Security Suite for a couple of years now and have never had any problems what so ever. Mind you I do an update every date of the virus definitions etc.
Anywhooo :) The reason I use Norton is that it has the ability to warn you of rapidly spreading threats and downloads/protects the PC automatically so for this reason alone if no other I would recommend it.
ZA and AVG are great free utilities but I would still rather use Norton.

TBH if I were you I would purchase Norton Internet Security Suite 2006, you can get it from http://www.overclockers.co.uk for about £29 (P&P inc) so rather than renew the package you have simply get the newer one, 2006.

Just a thought mate :)

I`ve used Norton since about 1992 and thought it was great. However this year I have got rid of it and replaced it with TrendMicro PCCillin. Version 14 was released last week. A bit gutted as I bought 10 copies of version 12 only a month ago.

The only reason I changed is that I found Norton slowed my computer down a great deal.

For example, I did a reformat and computer was running great, installed Norton back on and it then took 3 times longer to start up and 5 times longer to shut down. I also noticed that Internet Explorer took a lot longer to start and ran slower as well as many other programs.

After asking a few questions on here I discovered that lots of others had the same problems, it seems Norton doesn`t protect your computer anymore, it takes over it.

The TrendMicro does have this rapidly growing threat protection also as well as a pretty good spyware detector.

All the best

Gerald

Give the others ago if not happy, go back to norton, as stated above from my use of norton in the past it crawled all over my system and slowed things down. But if you happy with stick with it. I use zone alarm which works great with my wireless setup and avast. Though zone alarm pro is very good if you want to pay for it, which includes spam mail in conjunction with outlook express/antivirus and a really good spyware remover.

Personally I`d sack NIS and switch to both Zone Alarm and AVG. I`m on Zone Alarm Pro, which isn`t that much to fork out and I`ve had no problems with either (unlike NIS).

Out of curiosity how much does it cost to renew the subscription?

I`d been using Norton AntiVirus since 2000, but my renewal was due a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to bin it and use AVG instead. I`ve been using the free Zonealarm about 5 yrs already and it`s very good, and had AVG on the kids computer since Feb which seems to work well, so I`ve un-installed Norton and put AVG on mine too.

This later version than the one I put on the kids auto configures itself to your email accounts too, where the version earlier in the year had to be done manually (unless you chose the paid for version).

The computer does seem to start up and shutdown faster since I got rid of it.

Highly Recommend AVG7 and Zonealarm. Both are free and update no problem and AVG7 and Zonealarm received great reviews in Computeractive magazine. You should give them a try .

On line price was £35 for download from Symantec. I saw NIS2006 in Staples for £25 and NIS 2005 on ebay for £15 (but you never quite know with software from ebay). Both have 1 year subscriptions as well as updating the code.
However thanks to advice above and else where, I`m going to try zone alarm free and AVG. I`ll let you know what happens!

I`ll second that! Both excellent and free products (in their basic form).
