AVG acting up.

Tarzan (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 14th July 2005, 15:44

I`ve been using the AVG Free for a while now and really like it.
However, since the last couple of days, the AVG Control center is not launching. This used to be automatic at start up and I`d see an icon in my System Tray.
Even if I launch AVG manually, it does not let me launch the Control centre.
Howevr, it seems to be keeping itself updated.
I`m worried as I think my machine is unprotected against viruses, especially via email, which AVG used to scan incoming and outgoing mails.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

The anti virus will be running as a background task so you will receive some protection although of course you cannot use AVG to scan disks. The obvious solution is to uninstall AVG and reinstall again.

Mine did this a while ago too, for some reason.

Start the main program go to options--->configuration----->Miscellanious---->Load guard at system start.

Should do the trick.

Quite a lot of current viruses (viri?) attempt to shutdown AV processes in a number of different products.

It`s worthwhile doing periodic scans with an online scanning service e.g.

Panda
Trend Housecall

I use both of these for a weekly scan and they have picked up the odd trojan, even though I use AVG. This is not a criticism of AVG, it`s just that no AV product can catch everything 100% of the time.

I also have 4 Anti-malware products installed (paranoid - Moi?)!

LOL, Nick :D

Remember:It`s not the downloading, it`s the unpacking & playing that`s the problem.

Thanks to all who replied.

Somebody mentioned that AVG doesn`t pick up 100% of viruses. Well, the fact is that NO Anti Virus packages picks up 100% of viruses. It stands to reason that when a new virus is circulated then Anti Virus companies will have to write new definitions to detect the new virus and some companies will release new definitions quicker than other but this is not always consistent, ie. Panda might have a new definition for Virus X out before AVG does and AVG may have a new definition for Virus Y before Panda. What makes a virus checker good is the speed in recognising virus patterns and speed in scanning. This is something that is lacking in Panda`s software. Of the virus checkers that we have recently tested, Kapersky`s came out on top by a long way. Panda was in the middle due to its ease of use. Trend`s PC-Cillin was hopeless so I wouldn`t be too optimistic about their online Housecall scanning (although I havn`t tried Housecall though).

Personally I think AVG is much better with quick performance and it detected more viruses than most. Just because it`s free has nothing to do with how well it performs, as many people tend to believe. For those who are willing to pay, Kapersky is head and shoulders ahead of the others.

If people are accessing porn then I have absolutely no sympathy so if they require help on virus issues then I will not give any advice or tips if they are stupid enough to do such a thing - I think they should go out more.
