RE: Yabba Dabba Doo!
Sorry, folks! Just goes to show- if something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

RE: Star Trek USB stick
Just got mine and pleasantly surprised at the high quality. Don`t know how these guys are selling it at £4.99, the postage alone would have cost that much, going by the weight.
Thanks to the OP for this spot.

RE: Camcorders: Flip Ultra HD £62.75 , Flip Ultra £64.97 and Flip Mino II HD £104.98 - Amazon
Just saw one at my friend`s place - reasonably good pictures, but it seemed to hang an awful lot. Nothing you could do except power down completely and start again.
RE: Mini DV to Laptop without Firewire?
Ben,
I`m looking at buying either the Sony EB1E0E or the HP G62. Similar specs and price, but no Firewire or PCIMCIA slot on either.
RE: Mini DV to Laptop without Firewire?
Appreciate the quick response, guys.
The hub looks like the perfect solution.
The USB cap also looks viable, but would the quality be lower than that via Firewire?
Mini DV to Laptop without Firewire?
Hi,
I have a Sony Mini DV camcorder, from which I transfer movies to my Dell Laptop, using a Firewire cable connected to the laptop`s PCI slot.
I`ll be buying a new laptop soon, and am currently shopping around. I find, to my dismay, that none of the new crop of laptops seem to have a PCI slot! Or, for that matter, a Firewire port. The salespeople are not of much help either.
What are my options - is there any device that converts Firewire to Usb 2? I don`t want to buy a new camcorder - this one works fine.
Renault World Series Silverstone July 4-5: Free tickets
A great day out for motor racing fans, and kids under 16 go free. You can order up to 4 tickets. I went to Donngton Park a couple of years ago and enjoyed the day.

RE: Free Newspaper DVD
This Sunday (28th September) in the Observer - Local Hero.
Extremely funny and one of my all time favourites.
Virgin Sale starts 28th September - £ 5 boxsets.
The Virgin sale starts tomorrow at 8 AM. Some limited boxsets are on offer for the first customers.
Their leaflet shows, among others, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Pink Panther and Band of Brothers - all boxsets at £5!
It also says that there are a limited number of stores participating, mostly in London.
Good luck!

RE: Am I flogging a dead horse?
Apologies for a delayed response. A big thanks to all who have given me some valuable inputs.
I`ll be buying a new PC soon, and when I do, I intend moving all the data to the new one.
I`ll format the hard disk and reinstall Win 98, and the few essentials it will need, and the kids can use it till it finally dies.
Thanks again folks!

Am I flogging a dead horse?
[originally posted in error under Retailer Reviews]
My 7-year old PC (P-II 500 MHZ, 128 MB RAM, Win 98 ) is used mainly for surfing the net, creating the usual MS Office documents, and downloading pictures from a digital camera.
It has 2 Hard disks - one with 4 GB where program files are stored (75% full), and a 20 GB which is used to store data files.
Of late, it has begun to freeze for a couple of seconds at a time, and has generally slowed down.
I doubled the RAM to 256K, and the Windows Resource Manager shows 56% free. However, this occasional freezing is still there, and there is no appreciable improvement in speed.
Should I accept the inevitable, and buy a new PC? I will do so anyway, but would want the kids to have the old one for schoolwork, etc. provided I can make it speed up like it used to be.
Some people say I should overwrite Win 98 (don`t know the technical term) which would iron out many bugs. Others say I should re-format the 4 GB disk.
What are my options?
Cheers

RE: Canon MVX200i MiniDV Camcorder. £199 and free delivery..
I bought a JVC Mini DV Camcorder 4 years ago and have not been happy - maybe I got the one that was made on Friday!
For one, it would only work with JVC tapes (any other tape would get an error message), and the battery life was pretty poor.
I was just looking at the Jessop`s mag, and debating whether to get the Canon MV830i (£279) or a Sony CDRHC22 (£ 299)
RE: Brother DCP110C All In One Printer - (SILVER/BLA) £48.99
Great spot, marks! I was after one of these.
Can anyone advise what the running cost on this printer is? We do a fair bit of (black&white) printing at home, and I don`t want to spend loads of money replacing cartridges every couple of months.

RE: Zone Alarm problem
I`ve been using Sygate for a while, without any problems. I prefer it to Zonealarm.
Lately, I`ve been getting this message from Sygate:
"Application Hijacking has been detected
The application: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MDM.EXE try to launch another application: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RPCSS.EXE to go to remote host 86.130.52.101"
I did a trawl of the net, but got confused. Not sure if I should allow this program to contact the Internet (as its being launched from Windows) or block it.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

RE: Buying cheap in the US - advice please?
All
Thanks for responding so quickly - appreciate all the advice. Point taken about Voltage difference - learnt that the hard way once!
A tiny niggle remains: if I bought online from a US site using my UK credit card, would the merchant then report me to UK customs? Silly question, I guess, but could it happen?
Buying cheap in the US - advice please?
I sometimes go to the US on business and am considering buying some electronic items which are much cheaper there. If you buy online and have it delivered locally, even cheaper.
My question is: if I buy an item (say, a flash memory card) using my UK Mastercard, and have it delivered to my mate in NY, will I be liable (at a later date perhaps) for VAT or customs duties?

RE: AVG acting up.
Thanks to all who replied.
Nick - I don`t seem to have the Options tab on my version. Any clues?

AVG acting up.
I`ve been using the AVG Free for a while now and really like it.
However, since the last couple of days, the AVG Control center is not launching. This used to be automatic at start up and I`d see an icon in my System Tray.
Even if I launch AVG manually, it does not let me launch the Control centre.
Howevr, it seems to be keeping itself updated.
I`m worried as I think my machine is unprotected against viruses, especially via email, which AVG used to scan incoming and outgoing mails.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

RE: Stop messenger signing me in
These days, Messenger is acting really strange.
I normally switch to "Appear Offline" after signing in, and all appears fine. However, the screensaver comes on after a while of not using the PC. When I resume work, I find that Messenger has switched back to Online mode.
Any ideas?

RE: FREE VIRGIN PAY AS YOU GO SIMS!
I got 2 yesterday.
CD price comparison site?
Hi All
These days, before I purchase a DVD, I always look at www.find-dvd.co.uk, probably imho the best price comparison site for DVDs in the UK.
Is there something similar for music CDs? I`ve tried the usual suspects like kelkoo or dealtime, and am not impressed.

RE: Defrag question
Thanks to all your suggestions.
I have successfully managed to defrag - in the end, I shut down AVG and MSN Messenger, and it worked fine. Yes, it did spend an awful long time at 10%, but no complaints thereafter.
Cheers!

Defrag question
My system is rather old (P2, 500 Mhz, Win 98 SE) but quite adequate for my needs.
However, it was running a bit slow last week, so I decided to do a Disk Defrag, by the usual method - Start/Accessories/System Tools, etc. I did turn off the Screen saver, etc.
It started ok, and went up to 10%, and no more. I could see it working away, and did so all night, but it would not proceed beyond the 10%.
I`ve come across this issue once before, but it was a few years ago and I`ve forgotten what the solution was.
Any ideas?
Cheers

RE: Spyware Hell
Emily
A big thanks to you - I managed to empty the Temporary Inernet files, and then ran AVG again - my system is clean again, and IE has started to work again!
However, having used Firefox for a month, I will not go back to IE again.
