A 4 pin firewire socket will not charge the ipod
A 6 pin firewire will.

You also don`t have to use the docking station, you can connect the iPod with just the firewire cable. I am under the impression that it takes longer to charge via the computer, the adaptor is faster, does anyone else find this or is it just me?
