I upgraded my Telewest Broadband from the 256Kb service to 512Kb...how can I check that this has been implemented?

julianf i know you live fairly close to me, with your new PC, and the upgrade in speed is there much of an improvement?

Hi Mark...

I was originally on 512 when I joined up almost 2 years ago, then when the 256 came out I downgraded to save a few quid...I rarely download anything these days am browsing is just the same as ever....so from that, 2 things...(1) Maybe they never downgraded my service in the first place (2) Maybe simple browsing won`t display any significant change in performance...

I`ve only upgraded because I rang Telewest with the intention of leaving them and they upgraded my 256 to 512 indefinately with me still only paying the 256 charge. They have also given me the "free local & national calls at all times" tariff for £10 a month for the next 6 months instead of £15, i.e. £3.50 more than I was paying for "evening & weekend" with the idea that I`ll save that a month & more on the calls made.

I didn`t think they did 512 any more? I thought they`d upgraded all 512 users to 1 meg? Anyway, you can easily test it by downloading something. If your spedd goes much over 30KBps then you`ve been upgraded. There`s also a broadband speed test here (I found that after typing broadband speed test into Google):

They don`t do 512 officially any more. However they did admit that they did it as a `special` for some customers.

I just upgraded to the 2mb yesterday too. I`ve found it doesn`t make much difference when browsing, I guess that didn`t even stretch a 750k connection so won`t look any faster on 2mbit.

But I downloaded a Windows update last night, and you could certainly notice the difference, and download speed was around 250kbps where is was only around 75kbps on the 750k. If you watch any video clips you also notice them buffer, or even fully load a lot faster.

Here`s a couple of other sites for speedtests:
