HELP !!! I need to recover some digital photos from a card otherwise the missus will kill me.

My smartmedia card sems to be playing up or is corrupted, as I can view the digital pictures of my kids birthday in my digital camera (a Fuji 2800 Zoom) but when I attempt
to tranfer the digital stills to my PC (Win 2000) directly via a USB cable or via a card-reader then I get windows stating that the card is UNFORMATTED and do I wish to format the card (to which I say no). The photos are there but I cannot transfer them to the PC.

Are there any photo recovery software out there that are free (or sharware) that can resolve this. I have downloaded a trial version of PHOTO RECOVERY and it can recover the photos from my smartmedia card via a card-reader but I cannot save them unless I purchase the full software.

Any help will be appreciated and will save my life.

Sounds to me more like you`ve lost a driver or something on your system that allows your PC to read the contents of the card. Unless you have another card and that works in the card reader while the one in question doesn`t.

Try reinstalling any software on the PC that came with the camera.

Where did you format the card - in the camera or the reader? If it was in the reader that might be the problem.

TBH if the software you have is doing the job, and it`s not ridiculously priced and your life is at stake I think I`d be spending the cash. If there is a problem with the card, the more you faff with it the greater the danger it all goes pear-shaped.

i`ve had simmilar probs with mmc cards, allways the 256meg or above sizes, dunno why but xp seems to dislike them, they all work perfectly under M.E. i solved the problem accidentaly when i bought my epson R300 it`s in-built card reader seems to work everytime, whils 4 seperate "6 in 1" type card readers all had probs :/ (as i say, only under xp) and the error was allways the same, "device not formated, do you want to format the device" (even if you formated it would say exactly the same thing)

another thing you could try is a dedicated photo shop that handles digital prints, if the pics are still there, their machinery "should" be able to read the card properly.

hope this helps.

I thought about suggesting a photoshop, but decided against it. Most of them seem to use just bog standard PCs and with card readers (ie nothing specialist), so would be unlikely to have more joy. It might be worth a try though.

I used to run a Yahoo group supporting Photosuite, it`s still there, but archive only now. I have a recovery program in the FILES area of the group you could try. Looking at the link to the website for it I put there, it appears to be the program you tried, but it`s no longer freeware.

The file in the FILES area of my Yahoo Group is an older version of it which is freeware. I`ve never needed to try it myself, but feel free to download it, and try it out. I`d uninstall the version you`ve got on now before installing the freeware version in case it causes problems.

You can get it here, you`ll have to join the Yahoo Group first, to access the files area, the group is set to no longer accept new posts, it`s an archive only now.

and look in the FILES area on the left of the forum.

be carefull using a recovery tool, if you`re having the same probs i had then trying a recovery could alter the data on the card, bearing in mind i`m assuming the card is ok & it`s the reader you are having probs with, I thought about suggesting a photoshop, but decided against it. Most of them seem to use just bog standard PCs and with card readers (ie nothing specialist), tbh i thought the same thing But as it`s there business the card reader`s they use should be a lot more compatable than the average reader (hopefully) again, a photoshop will not help if it`s the memory card itself thats faulty, but it costs nothing to try it out ! and should not damage the files further, and if that does not work then you could try the recovery progs :)

hope this helps
