PC Keeps re-booting & mouse keeps freezing..Help required

oakland raider (Competent) posted this on Friday, 3rd September 2004, 15:25

Keep having problems with my PC. When i switch it on it sometimes freezes on the Windows XP page. Other times it just restarts itself whilst am in the middle of doing something. My other problem is that the mouse just stops working at times. You can be using it when all of a suuden, it just stops and freezes on the screen.
All 3 problems are happening on a regular basis now. >:(
My virus updates/checks ect. are all upto date, so i don`t think its a virus, but you never know these days.
Anybody have any ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks!

Not really sure but all I can think of is that it may be down to your video card drivers.
If possible , when it runs, try re-installing the drivers for the video card.
If possible, again when it runs, download the latest drivers for the card.
As I said I am not really sure but this may eliminate the card as the source of the problem at the least.

It could be lots of things, but as it keeps happening when you`re moving the mouse then a faulty mouse driver is a likely suspect.

Go to the Control Panel and try selecting a different mouse driver (or installing a more recent version of your current one)

If the worse comes to the worse then re-installing windows should sort this out (though obviously that`s a drastic option)

Hanging on the Windows startup screen indicates a driver issue. Do your Windows Updates and update all the drivers you can think of. Also try the trusty scan disk, disk cleanup and defrag. You may want to check what is running in the background and at startup, also. To check what is running at start up type `msconfig` in the run dialogue box.

Is the CPU fan turning?

I agree with Rassilon63, sounds like your PC is overheating. Try taking the sides of the PC box and running the machine, does that help the situation at all? Is it freezing less frequently? Do you have a case fan as well as a CPU fan?

When this happens can you still use the keyboard? I would have thought it unlikely to be a driver problem if it is happening randomly, especially if, as you say, sometimes it is happening during boot-up when it wouldn`t be processing any user input.

Similair as in random freezing (including during boot-up)? Have you tried running it with the case open to lower temparatures as I suggested earlier?
