Page 1 of why is my computer only reading new disk at 4.37gb when they should be 4.7??????

i wonder if anyone has had the same problem i recently have been having probs burning dvd media it says disks not big enough file size was 4.4gb trying to put on new disk thats 4.7. when i put mouse over the dvd icon it told me the disk was 4.37gb. so i tried another disk the same thing happened thought i had a dodgy batch so sent them back. i just went out and bought a different companys dvd media and the same thing is happening the computer is only reading the disk as 4.37, can any one help im confused?????????????????????? :/

The difference is due to a bit of a marketing scam really - the same applies to hard disks.
It`s due to sompanies conveniently using a Gb as 1000MB when it`s really 1024MB.
To get it in proper GB, divide by 1.024 cubed.
So, a hard disk that says it`s 120Gb is really only 111.7GB..
To make it easier, multiply by .931
Keep images, files etc. to about 4.35GB and you`ll be fine..

Your discs are fine - don`t worry about it. The reason for the discrepancy is that no-one can agree on how big a gigabyte is. :D

Ask a hard drive or blank CD/DVD manufacturer, and they`ll tell you:

1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1000 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte

Ask Microsoft, or any memory manufacturer (or just about anyone else in fact), and they`ll tell you:

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
1024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte

So DVD-Rs are 4.7GB in size by one convention, and 4.37GB by another.
