There`s quite a few around - but the best one I`ve found is "DVDShrink"
Take a look at http://www.dvdrhelp.com for some good advice on it

I use DVD shrink then copy the resulting files from the HDD to the "video" folder on the blank DVD using Easy CD.

Works nicely for my backups & aleviates the fear of leaving the original on the train. :)

Like the others I use DVD Shrink most of the time and then Nero Express to write the disc and have been very pleased with the quality.
Having said that I have also used DVD Fab on several occasions when the compression of DVD Shrink is approaching the maximum allowable compression. DVD Fab allows you to retain all the extras and menus without the need to reduce the size of the source material.
It does this by ripping the discs contents to two folders, ie, Disc A and Disc B.
After this you simply use Nero or other DVD writing software to create the two discs.
Disc A will normally contain the extras and part of the movie while Disc B will hold the majority of the movie.
Another "Wee" utility is Clone DVD. This essentially takes care of all of the brainwork and simply allows you to create a back-up with a few clicks of a mouse button. Might take about an hour to do the job but it does the job well.

As mentioned , get yourself over to http://www.dvdrhelp.com as you will find all the answers to your questions there and the forum can be a source of much information as well.

Choagy did you manage to back up a normal dvd movie with clone dvd as when I tried it would not copy as the disc was a copyrighted disc so I had to shrink the film first and I assumed that all movies would have the same result.

To get CloneDVD to copy a DVD with copy protection you need a program called AnyDVD as well. It then works well.

Thanks for the info anyway.

for extra long films, i.e. films that are for say 138 mins, e.g. pirates of the caribean, would dvd shrink fit this onto 1 disc?

it should do i backed up lord of the rings : two towers with dvd shrink i just removed the extras and compressed the film and then burned to dvd, it works perfect without any noticeable loss of picture quality :D
