Page 1 of Help- installing USB speedtouch 330 modem for broadband connection

I`m trying to help a mate install new Speedtouch 330 USB modem/software so he can start using Broadband.

OS is Windows 98 SE - the new device wizard don`t seem to recognise a new modems been attached. In fact he don`t recall it ever working since getting pc. Also tried installing modem/drivers manually, by using the disk that came with it. When W98 asks for driver ending in *.inf - has tried pointing to all the *.inf files on disk but W98 says can`t find them. I am trying to download the driver from the Speedtouch web page to give to him to see if that works.

Why doesn`t the wizard work? is there a way I can reinstall it?

No help here sorry, but I`ve just had broadband installed using a Motorola SB4200 which
is Ethernet & USB equipped.
The engineer set it to use my ethernet port, but I want to use the USB port so that I can run a x-over cable between my PC and my daughters PC. When I tried to get the modem
running using the USB connection, the PC wouldn`t communicate with the modem.

any ideas?

I had the same problem with Windows 98. It is to do with the USB drivers on the PC itself. The USB Speedtouch Modem is made to work on USB 2.0 connections, where Windows 98 SE only has the capability to connect USB 1.0 version hardware. The only way around this is to upgrade Windows to Windows ME (Millenium) or XP.

Thats what I had to do!

Spuddie007, I`m baffled why my mate is having the problem with his Speedtouch modem.
I also have W98 SE and installed exactly the same modem/model 2 months ago without any problems and am happily connected to Broadband.

I`m going to take my modem over to his place together with software etc and see if his modem is faulty - I`ve also managed to download 3.87MB drivers for W98 from the Speedtouch site. Hopefully will get it sorted. All I can think of he don`t keep his W98SE updated - where as I do.

I only have 2 USB ports on my PC but have used one of them a USB 4port hub. I`m just baffled why when you install the software and then plug in modem his wizard doesn`t kick in automatically and identify that a modem is attached :/

I had mine working on Win98SE before I upgraded. I did have a duff modem though which had to be returned - your idea of taking yours down to test should help there. The 330 drivers I downloaded were about 23MB in total though, not 3.87MB like yours. I got mine from Tiscali.

Thanks Wad, just checked and downloaded the drivers they were 3.74MB (For Alcatel supplied by ISP Pipex) to be exact. Having done a few searches on DELL support web page I note that a few people have had same problem - caused by duff modems.

When I installed mine (different modem) I was instructed to load the drivers when the CD autoran THEN plug in the modem & let it be detected.

I deviated from this once & had to get it to work the hardway on my newish laptop, compared to my 200MMX based PC at home was up & running in moments following the instructions.

Splintercell - ethernet is far better than the usb connection on the surfboards. The usb connection uses system resources and isn`t as good as ethernet.

Your best bet is to install a second network card in your machine and use that for the network, using the other for your modem.

Ideally, you should buy a cheap router with 4 ethernet ports in it. You connect your modem to the router, then the computers to the router. That way they are networked and share the connection.
