AOL BRANDING REMOVAL ON MY INTERNET EXPLORER?HOW?

colseddon (Competent) posted this on Monday, 4th August 2003, 15:28

Had AOL free trial and now my Internet Explorer has AOL branding in far right corner
when i surf the net.

Along the top of the window it also states

` Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by AOL.`

Well it wasn`t cos i only just installed the new IE 6 earlier today.
It said the same thing on my older version.

Can i get rid of it cos it annoys me ever so slightly.

Thanks in advance for any help. Col.

Click on "Start" > "Run"
Type regedit click OK

Find these registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main

For each one, double click where it says "window title" in the left-hand pane and delete the "provided by AOL" part.

To get rid of the logo in the top right, find this registy key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Toolbar

and delete BrandBitmap and SmBrandBitmap

I HAVE DONE EXACTLY WHAT WAS SAID AND STILL HAVE BOTH AOL BRANDINGS THAT I PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED.

I DELETED THEM TWO ITEMS LIKE YOU SAID, STILL GOT THE AOL BRAND IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER.

ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF THEM?

THANKS. COL.

Ah. That all worked when I got rid of Freeserve branding a few years back... AOL is notoriously difficult to remove so it might need a different method... will try and find a AOL-specific help page for you.

I missed out a final step for removing the logo (whoops!), this article might be useful, but I think it`s just the same info I gave (with the final step):

I finally ditched AOL after a love hate relationship , hell I even used to Beta test for them but one thing I learnt is that a complete re formatt is the only way to sort it all out.
I have had to do this to two machines after AOL destroyed them , they run slower crash just seems to be part of the fun. I am sure people will disagree but it is so evasive.

Update check sounds like it will contact aol to see if there is a newer version out.

Search bar - if you go to View - Toolbars do you have an option for an AOL toolbar? Or alternatively if you hit the Search button on the toolbar does it now open up AOL instead of what it was previously.

if you go to www.Net-Integration.net and look for the program they have there called HijackThis. download (its a zip file) unzip and run. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. save the results and then post it on their forum the experts there will go through the results and tell you what to get rid of. This will get rid of any hijackers not just AOL you are having problems with. Hope this helps I used this at the start of my security learning curve and it got rid of all the nasties that were lingering. Good luck let us know how you get on.
