I beg of you do not ever buy a PC from PC World, EMachines are full of cheap, unbranded bits. Stay clear and either get a good indendent shop to build you a PC or go for a branded machine like a Dell or a Compaq.

Never used one myself but I know the components to make them are cheap hence the cheap price.

I`m sure they`d be fine for basic text-based work but for media/games, I wouldn`t be too sure. Might be worth waiting for someone to post about the reliability as well.

We get loads of eMachines/Time/Tiny PCs in for repair at the shop, so I`d urge you not to touch them.

Yabba I agree with the other comments.
It simply comes down to what you want from it and how much you would be willing to spend.
Give us all an idea how much you are willing to stretch to and that would give each of us an idea as to the make up of any system that most could build.
TBH buying components and building a PC is not quite the daunting task many believe it to be.

Choagy :)

get youself down to your local computer fair, look for traders who also have a shop (which is usualy most of them) and you`ll get a good spec pc for a lot less dosh, but bear in mind you may have to buy the OS seperatly so always ask questions, and you won`t go far wrong.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Sorry to disagree. I bought an e-machine from PC World for £499 including a Flat Sreen monitor, and it seems to work fine, for now at least. Mainly used for undemanding tasks, but I reckon it`s very good value.

eMachines, you know what the `e` stands for - EMPTY !

That is they are empty of any parts worth over 10p, made as cheaply as possibly to crank them out to discerning members of the public who are to scared to try anything other than what PC World tells them to buy.

My advice. Talk to as many people as possible, ask lots of questions, try to find a friend who will maybe build you one.

Take a look at www.overclockers.co.uk and look at the barebone systems, then you only need to add a hard drive, processor and Windows (oh and a mouse and keyboard) and you are away.

I think they even make them for you too.

Another alternative is www.overclock.co.uk

Prebuilt goodies at www.alienware.co.uk

If only everything was half price at Woolies !
