Currently on Freeserve Anytime - Should I get Broadband? ADVICE!! HELP!! RECOMMENDATIONS!! PLEASE!!!

JamieM (Competent) posted this on Friday, 30th May 2003, 16:39

I have recently joined freeserve standard `anytime` package (or whatever its called) internet connection (56k modem). Problem is, I am being PESTERED to install a new phoneline, as obviously whilst connected to the net no-one can use the phone and no-one can get through to us!

Now, should I stick with standard modem dial-up and get a new phoneline installed, or should I get Broadband (or an alternative)? What do you guys recommend, and WHICH ISP should I go with? Who is the best/cheapest etc? And is Broadband my best options?

I am sure some of you have answered similar questions in this forum, but I can`t find any threads relating to this subject, so have written my own.

Basically, what I would like someone to kindly let me know is:

• Should I get a new phoneline and stick with freeserve (what would a new phoneline cost me in installation and rental)?

• Should I get broadband (or an alternative)?

• What ISP`s do you recommend for broadband?

• How do I save money on broadband - it seems expensive (and does it come in differing speeds)?

ANY HELP WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED! Thanks guys :-)

Personally I find freeserve anytime hopeless, slow, disconnecty, busy and even just engaged much of the time, though according to FS i`m the only one who has any problems and its all down to my computer.
Drove me mad last night as terrible, Am I alone on this ?????

Going by that I think I`d go for the broadband also what you can get down sounds pretty amazing in terms of real time viewing etc just keeep off certain websites and downloads or your computer or something might explode.

Anyway I`m one of those silly existing Anytime !!!! saps who actually pays 14.99 while the system clogs up with all of the three month only brigade.
So just stuck with Maybe, Sometime, Half the Time.
perhaps they should call it that.

yes go broadband. Mark.

I had the same problem when I left them 18 months ago Moorsman. I used to have a perfectly good number to use and then they told me to change it and had no end of problems.

As for changing to broadband I havent looked back.

Check out http://www.adslguide.org/ for details on whats available etc.

Have a look at www.adslguide.org.uk (as above) - tells you everything you need to know at broadband. Definitely worth it - you can get packages as cheap as £18/19 (Gio etc) - been with Pipex a year and pretty good.

Thanks you guys. I knew you wouldn`t let me down!! I`m going to take a sneeky peek at that info/advice site you have mentioned - sounds like exactly what I need. I have heard Tiscali being mentioned a number of times recently, regarding being a good broadband service. Anybody anything to add to that? Additionally, is the lower speed broadband any good?

Regarding freeserve, I too have experienced connection problems, and even losing data transfer whilst connected. I thought it was just me, but obviously not (I think freeserve realise they are getting a lot of 3 month-ers, as their prices have just gone up, obviously to compensate!!).

I`m gonna put my neck put and stick up for Freeserve Anytime. I`ve been with them since September of last year - NEVER had any connection problems, no engaged signals, and always connect at 50666bps.. I even leave the connection on overnight downloading, by using Getright combined with setting my dial-up connection to re-connect instantly after the 2hr cut-off..!
