Noisy PSU, Anyone got any advice on buying a quieter one?

The3rd (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 17th May 2003, 17:28

I decided to upgrade the Power on my computer which i only built about a month ago. The current PSU came already installed in the case, but is always audible unless i`m playing music really loud.
Can anyone tell me of a decent (by that i mean 350W+ and quiet) PSU and where is the best place to buy them from?

Cheers

Go to http://www.overclockers.co.uk

I bought a Q-tec 450W PSU It is reasonably quiet, and very well priced.

400W £19 + delivery, 33dB
450W £22 + delivery , 33dB
550W £27 + delivery ,33dB

Or you can go to http://www.quietpc.co.uk who have quieter PSU`s but they cost a lost more. 400W £86+ vat +delivery. but it is 28dB

The only thing is they dont have a 240volt output for monitors or an isolation switch on the psu.

Quietpc one`s are excellent, I got one cheap because it was slightly dented and when I plugged it in I had to check it was powering up it was so quiet.

Your better off running the monitor from a direct supply anyway rather than drawing the power from the PC,especially if you have a couple of hardrives etc......

I`ve got a flatscreen monitor that has to be run from a direct power supply, so that`s not a problem.

I`m probably going to get a q-tec PSU as there is no way i can shell out £50-£80, so thanks to everyone that recommended them

It`s not really drawing power from the PC though, it just provides an extra mains connection for convenience. Electrically, it`s exactly the same as using a 2-way adapter socket.

I wasnt suggesting running a monitor, just pointing out that it doesnt have the output that some PSUs have.

on overclockers on each of the q-tec power supplies they say "Note - the power cables are shorter than usual on this PSU " has anyone who has one of these found this to be a problem or are the cables actually long enough?
also, has anyone bought a zalman flower cooler? are they any good and worth the price?

cheers.
