Page 1 of Anyone here love trying out new music?

Personally I`m quite stuck in my ways, spend a lot of time listening to the same old stuff, and only listen to new stuff when I`ve got hooked on a single (like I`m currently into the Ting Tings but that is after being exposed to their stuff through adverts and TV rather than seeking it out).

Does anyone here get into new stuff before it hits the big time?

I try to.

I`m a bit of music snob, in that I don`t like some stuff after it becomes big, but I think it`s more a case of it`s not actually that good and hearing it on the radio etc means it gets overkill and then I get bored of it.

That`s why I like using Last.fm, as it can be good for checking out other news bands etc. I always try and have a blast of all the smaller bands that are playing in the festivals I`m going to or who are a support act at a gig I`m going to.

i think I do.. but thats because i spend a lot of time looking at music blogs..
I was aware of vampire weekend long before they broke.. and um..
well, loads of bands that you never heard of, but pop up on ads.

i am a w***er..but i do love music..

I never, ever, ever, ever, listen to the radio.

I my college/Uni days, I used to religiously listen to the Evening Sessions, Mark and Lard, and John Peel. My stereo had a timer, and would auto reverse record when it got to the end of a tape which was useful if a band was doing a John Peel session :)

I`ve got shed loads of tapes still where I would edit out the tracks in between the band in session to have my own session tapes :) Inevitably I was so busy making the tapes and listening to the recordings of the actual shows I`d never listen to them again!

Nowadays I generally rely on Whoot and "real world mates" for my new bands. Also I`m a big Mike Patton and John Zorn fan, so I buy a lot of their stuff, side projects they do, and related bands, those on the same labels, or I see supporting them.

I watch Jools Holland to hear new stuff, but I don`t end up liking and buying much of it. I bought Battles` CD Mirrored after seeing them on th show.

I review synth music for another site, although I`ve brought one of those reviews across to ours, so I tend to get a lot of stuff that is never going to break through. I enjoy expanding my listening taste with new stuff, albeit within my own genre of listening.

How often do you replay stuff when you like it Si?

Depends. Problem is that so much comes in (relatively speaking) that it`s sometimes hard to go back. There`s some stuff I`ve received that I`ll go back to again and again, but taking the total as a percentage, probably less than 25% on a semi-regular basis and probably around 30-40% that I`ll never go back to again despite liking it.

Too much material and not enough time.

Have the same problem with DVD`s though (which means time lost that would maybe have been spent listening to music). I don`t even want to think about the total number of unwatched bought DVD`s in my collection, last count was roughly 60 (boxsets count as a single for accounting purposes...).

It`s a tough old life...

Having been collecting music for about 20 years, I`m kind of stuck in my ways now, but still look out for the odd bit of newer stuff.

Have enjoyed watching Channel 4/More 4`s "Live at Abbey Road" as an exposure to some people I`ve not heard before, and have acquired the complete catalogue of John Mayer as a direct result...

Like you, RJS, I struggle with new stuff.
I occasionally hear stuff that interests me enough to buy it, but I tend to default to older stuff.

Welcome to old age. ;)

I`ve been listening to a lot of old stuff that I always avoided when I was in my teenage metal phase.

I do like a lot of new stuff especially on MTV 2`s 120 mins, my fave band at the moment are Hot Chip, because I do love electro music ever since the late 70s early 80s, so they take me back to my youth.
