Recommendations: Sony Amp and Floor Standing Speakers.

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 24th March 2002, 18:57

I need to buy a Sony amp and some floor standing speakers for my sisters living room and I haven`t got a clue what to buy.

The amp "must" be a Sony to go with her Sony TV and Sony DVD player (NS300), "it just wouldn`t look very nice if it wasn`t Sony"!!!

The speakers "have" to be beech to go with her floor.

The budget is quite reasonable, the most important factors for her are that everything matches!

Cheers,
r8sso

What`s "quite reasonable"? Also is "beech" real beech veneer or would beech effect be OK?

Looking to spend £150 for the speakers and the amp must have DD5.1 and DTS decoders so however much one of those costs.

As for the beech finish, as long as the colour matches she`ll be happy.

Rosso, try Richer Sounds, the site is painfully slow, but they do a lot of AV bargains, including a Sony DD/DTS Receiver that`s quite inexpensive, and I think do some good AV speaker sets, some in Beech finish. Roger.

I`ve got my eye on the Mission M73`s and the Sony STRDE875 reciever. Would these two complement each other well?

What exactly is the difference between a reciever and an amplifier?!

Thanks.

Receiver is an amplifier with a radio in it too.
I asssume you`re just going for a pair of speakers at the moment?
Check out http://www.qed-uk.com for good speaker prices - free delivery if > £100, too. M73`s - £136.
I think it may be worth looking at the Wharfedale 8.3 floorstanders, too (but downer is they come in maple rather than beech - looks OK on the piccy though).
Also, I guess from the fact that the floor is Beech colour, it is a laminate floor? I suggest when installing the speakers, you get some 2p coins, and place them under the spikes to avoid killing the floor - you might want to drill a small indentation into each coin to sit the spike into. Hi fi shops sell special things to do the job, but they`re not 2p each! Maybe blutack the coins down, too.

Poor girl, wanting a Sony amp...

Anyways, if its got to be a Sony, then the 875 reciever will be fine, but don`t expect the last word in sonic excellence. The Mission m73`s will flatter the bright and upfront sound of the Sony amp though, so your choice is wise.
Richards advice with the coins is a sound one, however you may want to ditch the spikes completely and consider squash balls instead. Simply walk into your nearest sports shop and purchase a pack of four of the crazy black things, cut them in half, then place each half under the corners of the speakers.
The result? Instant improvements in bass, non slip, and easy on the laminate floor!

I bought some Mordaunt Short 902 signature speakers frpm Richer sounds for £140. Excellent speakers and they do perfectly with my Beech Laminate flooring!!

Westy - top tip regarding the squash balls - I`m off to a sports shop now!!

Hi Westy (or anyone else)

Do you have any personal experiance of the STRDE875 or was the above just based on your general opinion of SONY AV Reciever`s?.

I ask because I was considering oredering a reciever for about 200 GBP and from the specifications this one would fit the bill.

How does the Sony compare to say the Sherwood`s or Kenwood that Richer are selling at that price point?.

Cheers Vic

Richer have the Yamaha RXV520RDS on their site for £179, which I assume is a peer of the excellent 420 and 620 (Westy?). If so, you can`t go wrong for that price.
