Setting Up

Gallant (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 7th March 2002, 17:32

I have
A sony tv with 3 scart sockets, and 1 phono socket (red & white)
A Pace digital Box with 2 scarts , and 1 phono socket (red & white)
A VCR with 2 scarts, a 1 phono socket (red & white)
A Sony DAV-S500 DVD with No scart socket and the usual video in, out etc. 1 yellow composite hole and (i think) an s-video socket

The leads I have are
3 scart to scart leads
1 yellow composite to yellow composite lead
2 phone to phono leads (red & white)
1 Scart to 2 phono sets of leads (red & white)
1 Scart adapter that take a yellow composite lead and also a set of phono leads.

How do I set up to get the best out of my system. At present the sky button does nothing on the remote but all other aspects of the remote work. I would like the Sky button to work.
I would also like to have sound from all sources come through my DVD surround sound speakers.

Please help.

If it`s a typical Sony TV then Scart 2 is best used for your DVD either via yellow composite cable and scart adaptor, or as I use, an S-video to Scart lead.

Connect your digibox and video to scart sockets 1 and 3, and use the other scart cable to connect between digibox and video for recording. This way audio from these two units, and the TV itself can be fed from the audio out on the back of TV to the DAVS and its surround speakers.

Not to sure about the remote with the DAVS-500, but I use a Sony amp and TV in a similar setup, and the amp`s remote handles most of the functions of the TV so I normally just use that and the digibox remote.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

What about getting the sound from the TV to come out of the DVD speakers. Which phono leads do I connect and where? I seem to have tried every connection but the only sound from the DVD speakers is when the DVD is playing.

Is it worth purchasing an s-video to scart lead instead of the composite?

As you say you have the audio-in on the back of the DAVS, the connection will be from the back of the TV to the back of the DAVS. This input will probably have to be selected as AUX or similar on your system -check your manual on this one.

One point though, if you set your TV to Pro-Logic you won`t get any sound- I don`t know why??!! It needs to be set on Virtual - it should stiil be picked up as a Pro-Logic signal

As for the cable, I find the picture quality an improvement on the composite supplied with my DVD player, a fairly good one should be about £20-30 - fortunately I got mine thrown in for free;-)

Still I have no sound from my DVD speakers when watching Sky or Terrestrial TV.

I have a phono lead from the back of the TV to the DVD. It must be a setting which needs altering on the TV or DVD but which setting?

I have a DAVS-800 and to listen to the sound from the TV you have to switch the function button on the remote to Video 2 on the DVD player. I don`t know if the 500 is the same in that respect. My TV has audio outputs on the back which I have connected to the inputs on the back of the DVD with a standard Phono lead.

Also, I have a Sony TV and if you have the virtual surround on, nothing will come out of the DVD. You have to turn all that off.

Hope this helps in some way.

Mike

Sorry this is probably basic stuff, but I have a Sony TV, how do you turn the virtual sound off. What does Video 2 on the DVD do and does it need any special setting up.

How do you get DVD to arrive on screen the second you press play whilst watching sky or terrestrial TV.

I have 3 scart connectors in the back of the tv. What is the best order to put my satelite receiver, DVD and video. I believe RGB may make a difference.
