New Freeview box required...What`s good and what`s bad?

Oakland_Raider (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 2nd September 2010, 22:54

My current Goodmans Freeview + box is on its way out. Keeps freezing and rebooting on a daily basis. Pain in the backside when recording programs.
I know these "problems" are pretty common with most Freeview boxes, but was hoping you fine people could probably suggest or recomend a new box.

Needs to be Twin tunner, Hard drive / DVD recordable. Prefer 14 day planner, but 7 would not be a problem.

Cheers

I wouldn`t like to make a suggestion, as it is very hit and miss these days, but just thought I`d ask another question:

Are you after Freeview Standard Definition or Freeview High Definition? If you have a HD Ready TV, you really ought to consider the latter while you`re at it. ;-)

Another suggestion....
Most Sky+ and Freeview recorder problems are caused by a  failing hard drive.
Have you tried swapping out the hard drive on the "failing" unit?
Especially if you have one of the correct type that you hardly use as it may be a very cheap alternative to a replacement :)

Unless... of course... you want a new one and it`s a damned good excuse to do so ;)

Aye HDD could be failing, also it might be overheating.

I`m after a standard definition system as i do not have HD TV.

I never thought about replacing the drive on the box. I might look into that before laying out another few hundred quid on a new box.

Is the H/Drive the same as what you find in a PC and how would i replace it? (not very techy with these sort of things)

Usually the same, but will be either SATA or PATA (IDE)
That`s just the connectors it runs on, if you can take the lid off and post a picture someone here will tell ya what it is.

Also, if you google the make n model or add replace hard drive I`d guess you`d find a tutorial somewhere.
Sky+ drives just change for a blank drive, reboot and it formats/initialises itself and off you go.

Saying that, my Sky+ has started arseing about again so time to hassle Sky for a free HD box methinks.

SATA will look like a very thin cable about less than 1cm wide, whilst IDE will be a much wider ribbon cable about 2" wide.
