The pioneer seems to be around £199 at most online companies although the r.r.p is £249.99. Seems pretty good. Imay buy one myself.

What are SVCDs?

Hardly a relevant argument that !!
Lip sync on SVCD`s !!!???
Most folk don`t even know what they are, never mind use them !
From a DVD point of view the Toshiba seems to shade the Pioneer in that the 444 does seem to have a more marked layer change.
Layer change goes unnoticed on most discs with the Toshiba but the Pioneer seems to give a noticeable delay.Read past messages for proof.
For £150 the Toshiba is a snip. The Pioneer is certainly not paying more for. The only ` fault ` that people seem to pick up on with the 210 is a slightly noisy drive but that`s a subjective thing.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

No problem with Noisy drive, but Lip sync on SVCD IS VERY IMPORTANT. These discs can be made on home computers from camcorders & are very high quality. There are now SVCD recorders out there now. If you don`t use them now you will. I know of two other people who are selling there Toshiba because of this problem. For DVD playback..excelent. MP3 not so good(won`t locate all tracks) if a lot are on the disc.

Beg to differ mate
I buy a DVD player to play DVD`s
I couldn`t give a rat`s ass if it plays MP3 or anything else.
I don`t own a computer at home, and I don`t want one. I don`t own a camcorder and I don`t want one.
As long as it plays DVD`s well I think it`s completely unfair to mark it badly for anything else.
You might as well mark it badly coz it`s crap as a hoover....

I can`t agree more.

Why do people insist on playing audio cds, mp3s stuff like that on dvd players?

Haven`t these people heard of hi-fi systems?

You`re right, the Tosh` it is a crap `Hoover`, I`m getting a Dyson they`re much better.

Do you know if they play mp3s?
