a question about Surround

Marshan Man (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 30th January 2002, 01:37

i have a Dansai 852

now i want to get a surround sound system... my understanding is that the 852 reads the DTS signal off the DVD vid, want i want to know is... does this mean i need to get an amp which deals with the DTS encoding, and works the surround sound gubins.. or can i get a simpler (cheaper) system cos the DVD player does this for me.

im lookin at the yamaha VS10 or the sony 215... are these decent set ups? is if i need a DTS amp.. what should i be lookin for for my money?

preferably below £300 for the amp n speakers....

cheers

I bought the sony htk215 and am very pleased with it. Looks good, sounds good and not a bad price either.

You are right - the Dansai only passes on the DTS signal, it doesn`t decode it. The Yammy VS10 will do the job nicely.

I am currently one of the people awaiting an order from unbeatable. I hope to receive my order soon for the sony htk215. I see that you have bought one and are happy with it. Please answer a question that has been bugging me for a while now. Why do sony insist that it is not dts ie have a dts decoder inbuilt. I have spoken to a number of sites selling the htk 215 and they all insist that it is not dts where as everyone on this site that has bought one imsist that it is so who is right here. Also i am worried that the system is not going to be very loud. I have a prologic tv at the moment so I wanted to upgrade to dts My tv is connected to two 100wtt 8ohm speakers so could I use these with my htk215 system when I eventually get it.

Bluenose1,

What size is the room you`ll be using? My living room is approx. 16x12 and the 215 is more than capable in there!

I don`t know why retailers claim the 215 does not output DTS - it does (and it`s great!).

Have fun! (anymore questions just ask).

i suppose my room is on the medium to large side i would say 12 x 30 ish andin the near future a wall is bieng knocked down which will make it about 12 by 40ish. Can the speakers be upgraded as my tv has 100 watt speakers which are 8ohms and the spec on the 215 says it has 8 ohms speakers. Not knowing too much on the logigistics here can they be interchanged if need be.
