RE: I need a good 5.1 system

iv been warned off combos... thru many sources.

u could probly pick up a decent VHS player and a decent DVD player for about the same money, if not cheaper.

as an example... the sanyo HV-DX1E combo player... the last write up i saw of it came to the conclusion of it just being a convience of being a 2 in 1 box... but had a drap performance and was more expensive than gettin a seperate DVD and VHS set up.

£100 will get u a VERY decent DVD player these days... my year old Dansai 852 £99 from tesco last year has served me very well... and it has played everything iv tried (cept the nightmare on elm street 5 disk box set )

and i believe theres a Wharfdale DVD-M3 out for around £100

and seeing as combos seem to start at around £200... then that leaves £100 to get a videoplayer... which is will get a damn good one too!

on the 5.1 set up

eltac have some good systems available thru richer... theres the cinema 6 sat/sub package or the earlier mentioned floorstander version.

iv heard good things about the accousic energy apeio p5 mentioned earlier. or else theres the mission sets some with subs some without...

best bet is to look around, then audiution some before u buy, see which sound best to you

RE: Pay through the nose for region 2? or buy region 1?

well, i dunno. but i got the dansia 852 for £99 or so. it plasys multi regoin with a simple hack via the remote. plays RCE encoded disks.... plys Region 4 disks are cheaper, generally dont come in that crap cardboard casing, has the same feature as USA and UK and are out around the same time as USA

look at harry potter....... for an example... over here its £20 min..... in Oz with the exchange rate its £10 ...... $3 - £1

RE: Dansai 852 vibrations

iv never had any problems with vibrations or buzzing when playing disks.

the only problem iv had is the nightmare on elm street boxset DVD`s dont play properly, at certain points the DVD just returns to the main menu.. :¬(

RE: WISH YOU`D SPENT MORE MONEY ON A BETTER MACHINE?

nope, not at all. the Dansai i got for £99 from tesco at the start of the year has been fantastic. when we got it, we had no expectations of what it could do, and comparing it to friends machines that cost far more, yet offer no better picture or sound quality. And it is remote hackable and RCE isnt a problem. remote is nice.

that was untill we moved the player upstairs into my room, and out ofmy parents lounge, ment that it is now hooked upto my 14" TV via a aerial cable from the video, because of a lack of scat sockects on the TV hence a loss in picture quality. sound is taken care of via my 4 speaker stereo, via a phono cable.

at the moment im saving for a bigger TV and then maybe a amp. but no. im happy with the budget player i have.

RE: Thanx for your advice (Clayts,RichardH and markyd) New advice needed?

So the 16m for £25 JVC 16 gauage audio cable from currys aint the best then? i canne tell from the sound i get....

hell i got the origonal speaker cable wired to this stuff via a chock box. or for the surround speakers its also got a length of (dirt cheap) other speaker wire in the middle

RE: Are all

Iv got the Dansai 852 from Tesco, extreemly impressed with it. great pic quality, the remote hack works fine for all reigons, as well as RCE encoded players as well as a macro off funtio, DTS output, all the output sockets u could need...

we bought it with not much expetations with what it could do, and it does everything my sis` £500 player does and more (hers dont have a DTS reader or decoder or play anything but DVD videos) i dunno the make of hers.

so for £99 ur gettin a hell of a player (not to mentions Tesco`s inclusive 3 year garantee. as far as i know its a mass produced thing, which goes under variouse names in differnet places.

RE: Still more dumb questions.....

cheers.

i looked at the Yammy VS10 in Dixons yesterday... deffinatly not for me, i had read that it was an amp u either loved or hated.... and the speakers didnt seem up to scratch.

the Denon in the shop (it was a complete package - dvd, amp and speakers, but that was 600 squid!

the denon looked good tho :¬) (but id get it in black)

so im down to the denon 1802 or Technics SA DX950.

Still more dumb questions.....

OK. still in research mode for a Surround system, on a buget...

first option is to just buy a kit in a box, namley the Yamaha VS10 and be done.

or (this is where the next question comes in) do DIY HT

get a seperate amp. hook my Shape Midi system (with 2 main 100w front speakers, and 2 rear surround speakers (25w)) to this amp, and buy a new sub and centre speaker. then hook the stereo to the amp via the digital input/output as well as the DVD player (dansai DVD852).

my thinkin is that i can get a better amp for the same money as buying an all in one set, and the speakers im useing will provide better sound quality.

for a sperate amp im lookin at Denon , the lower end of the sony DB range, or the yamaha RXV620 - 420 models.

all told im lookin at spending not much more than £300 on the amp, and getting the sub and center speaker in the months to come.

cheers for your help.

a question about Surround

i have a Dansai 852

now i want to get a surround sound system... my understanding is that the 852 reads the DTS signal off the DVD vid, want i want to know is... does this mean i need to get an amp which deals with the DTS encoding, and works the surround sound gubins.. or can i get a simpler (cheaper) system cos the DVD player does this for me.

im lookin at the yamaha VS10 or the sony 215... are these decent set ups? is if i need a DTS amp.. what should i be lookin for for my money?

preferably below £300 for the amp n speakers....

cheers
