Anyone had a play with the Denon AVR 1509 or 1909? Opinions Pls.

Looks like our trusty Denon AVR 1803 has gone to the home cinema setup in the sky so looking for a new amp/receiver.

Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on either of these two?

I am thinking of going for the 1509 as it is £275 and 5.1 sound, things are a bit tight at the moment and we only have 5 speakers and the sub so it fills the need perfectly, near enough a direct replacement of our 1803.

But, I`m also considering the 1909, a lot more expensive at £440 but you get HD audio, video upscaling and a few other toys, we don`t have a BluRay player or sky HD just yet but may get them at some point next year so it`s sort of future proofing, or at least thats what I`m trying to convince myself ;)

All the best

Gerald.

I`ve got a 1905 which I bought a few years back now...does the job well enough for the money. Can`t comment on the HD audio and switching side of things though as that didn`t come about until a few generations later.

As long as they haven`t made them worse as they`ve brought out new models, I don`t think you can go far wrong.

I`ve got an ageing AVR 1602 which seems to be playing up a bit now. Doesn`t play any DD through Sky box anymore (may be an issue with Sky firmware though) and I have intermittent probs with surround sound through the DVD player. I`m not likely to be changing it any time soon but I think I`d be looking at the Onkyo 606 that everyone seems to rave about.

Ours is giving off a very loud hum, similar to a mains hum.

I`ve read a few reviews now and the AVR 1909 does look really good, marginly beat the Onkyo 606 in What hifi.

After doing a bit more research it looks like it could be a faulty transistor on the power amp stage so I might have a look at it over the weekend to see if I can repair it before parting with me coppers. There are 5 big MosFet buggers in a row along the heat sinc, never know one might be showing signs of overheating or has de-soldered itself.

BTW the AVR 1909 is on offer for £319 in Richer Sounds, in store only, £130 off the rrp

Ooooohhh....now I`m very tempted.

I really just need to convince the Mrs that we should the ditch the VHS recorder that hasn`t been powered on for over 2 years now!!!! (To make space for the 1909).

You considered the Yamaha 863 as well? Heard it`s better than the 1909 and cheap to boot.

Unfortunatly I managed to repair our 1803. Pleased it is working again and that I havn`t had to spend £320 I can`t spare at the moment, but at same time gutted I didn`t get a shiny new amp for Christmas ;)

Turned out there were 14 MosFet transistors, re-soldered them all and gave it a good clean and it did the job, at least for now.

Alfie, we had a similar problem with no DD through sky, turned out someone had pressed the analogue button on the amp so it would only give out sound as ProLogic 2, changing it back to auto sorted the problem, there is also an option in the sky settings for optical out type, think the choices are surround or dolby digital.

I hate stuff like that, where you`re convinced something has gone badly wrong, ans it`s the most obvious thing which you forgot to check. I remember when I`d lost sound from both front speakers - turned out that someone had clicked the B speakers button rather than the A one. Annoying!

Just a heads up if anyone is thinking about buying Denon. Their trade prices go up as of the first of Feb. So expect the retail price to rise.
