32 or 37 LCD TV

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 6th August 2008, 01:19

I`ve been saving for a new LCD TV for a while now, been round the shops looking at as many TV's as I can, writing down the model numbers of the ones i like the look of, then checking for online reviews.

I like the LG 37LG6000, its the best of the sets I`ve seen inside my price range. Good reviews as well. (Link)

I`m hoping that Costco will be selling it when i have the money, as their tv`s have a five year warranty. I`ve not been there for a while, so i don`t even know if they sell the TV.

Anyway, I was looking online to see what the best online price I could find today, & noticed that the smaller 32" LG 32LG6000 was £180 cheaper.
But Its not 1080p, its a 1080i

At the moment, I don`t have a Sky HD box, just a standard Sky+ box.
I also have 2 up scaling Panasonic hard drive dvd recorders, both using HDMI.
My laptop has a HDMI out.
I also have 3 old games consoles that I want to use via the scart (a PS2, an Xbox & a Gamecube)
I do plan to buy a blue ray player at some point in the future, but can`t make up my mind, to buy a PS3, or stand alone player.

So, my question is,
is a screen size that's only 5" bigger, & 1080p instead of 1080i worth the extra £180.
Its hard to tell, standing in a shop, if a 37" TV looks so much bigger.
And does the 1080p V`s 1080i matter?
The larger tv weights a lot more, but i don`t see that it matters much.

My curent TV is a 32", so at least I know how that size looks.
Anyone have an opinion either way
Thanks :)

EDIT-
Here are the links to the two TVs…

Not 100% convinced of 1080p benefits at that size but I went from a 32" CRT to a 37" LCD and am very happy I went for the bigger size. I would definitely get the larger screen.

I went for a 32" LCD, but wish I`d gone for the 37".
Says it all really.
1080p doesn`t bother me, as I`m not overly interested in gaming or blu-ray.
When SKY go to 1080p though (currently 720p/1080i) I will buy a 1080p telly.
No sign of that in the near future.

No contest. Get the 37" or you really will regret it.........big time. SIZE does matter. I got mine from brother in law who works for Toshiba(he doesn`t make TV`s) and I sort of decided on 32" based on 28" WS CRT which I had at the time and the money saving. He convinced me to pay the extra and get the 37" and I thank God he did.

Get John Lewis to price match - they`ll give you a 5 year warranty too. :)

Argos are ludicrously expensive for TV`s.
It blows my mind that people even consider them. :/
This is a perfect example of when a catalogue-based business just doesn`t work, because they simply cannot react to price changes quickly enough.
Currys are making a big deal in the press about beating Argos` prices, but that`s hardly something to crow about. :D

I would go 37", the size difference is more than you would expect.

I know why people by TVs from Argos...the warranty`s on the cheaper sets are usually collect, repair and return and don`t have excellent pixel policies. If you buy a shiny new tv and you have four dead pixels on it...your manufacturers won`t cover it under their pixel policy...what would you rather, somewhere you can actually take it and cause a stink knowing they will back down if someone is making a fuss in their store, or an online supplier who can ignore emails and phone calls quite easily?

Worth an extra £100 or so in my opinion.
