:/my problem is when i record off the television and take out the disc to play later,it automatically formats it,wiping it clean( even though i finalise after recording) i dare`nt put on any discs of the family on in case they are lost for good.any help would be appreciated.

I know nothing about this system, but I do know about DVD recorders.
That is a classic sign of a drive struggling to read discs - if it can`t detect anything, it assumes it is blank and formats it ready for use.
You could try a lens cleaning disc. If that doesn`t cure it, and the guarantee is still valid, you may have to use it and get the machine exchanged or repaired (whatever they are willing to do with it)
If you still have the receipt and it is less than a year old, contact the retailer first. You may have to go to Akai themselves, I really don`t know, but definitely start with the retailer.
If the warranty has expired, you may need a new machine. Sorry. :(
