Advice on a centre speaker

David Banner (Competent) posted this on Monday, 3rd December 2001, 22:42

I`m still going down the home cinema should be heard not seen route, my fronts and rears are Wharfedale flat panels, this is also to sort out the fact that some seats in a rather large room are right underneath the front speakers, so their spread out sound works rather well. Having got my Yamaha 420 amp and 205 subwoofer due to you guys (ie Westy and Andrew), I now want a friendly centre, that is, good but discrete (I`m using a single Mission 760i at the moment and it was never designed for this). So any thoughts on the Mission m7c1 Centre Speaker, given the rest of my kit, and my need for discrete kit?

Thanks

Dave

I was always taught that you should try to retain similar branding (and better still speaker style) for your centre speaker (ie Wharfedale Diamond 8.3s as fronts should be matched with the Wharfedale Diamond Centre - that kinda thing).

However, you`re looking for discrete : yes, the Mish you mention is certainly that, and it`s certainly a good speaker, but quite how it`d merge soundfield-wise with the NXT style speaker, Gawd only knows....

Andrew ? Westy ? Helllllllllllllllllppppppp.......

Dave

The last posting is quite right in that you should aim to get the same tonal quality across the front speakers. It might be an idea to contact Wharfedale and ask if they do anything that matches the Loud panels.
Can you not use another Panel for the centre ?. Wharfedale might sell you just one.

Dave,

I have recently bought the Miss M72 including the rears and the centre you speak of.

The centre is a good speaker but I wouldn`t call it discrete in that it is quite wide. I am not too popular at home since buying it. If you were to sit it on top of your tv then it would stick out like a sore thumb. It is very difficult to find a TV stand that will take it (unless you go for a TV ench from IKEA). Other than that downside it is, as I say, a very god speaker.

Hope this helps

Richard

1)Richard, just how wide is it? my "TV" is a 29" Presentation Monitor.
2)Clayts and Jasp, I understand what you`re saying and I agree: if we were talking about normal speakers. These NXT speakers give me a wonderfully envelloping sound field left, right and behind, what I want now is a conventional speaker to give me some focussed sound from the front centre. My little Mission 760i is doing a grand job but it`s not shielded so has to sit on the floor and I would like something a bit gutsier.

Hello, Andrew here. first of all many thanks for putting me up there with Clayts and Westy. Befor I give my opinion let me clean my nose of the brown stuff.

Normally matching your speakers is all inportant so if someone walks from left to right thier voice does not change in the center. But with NXT speakers because they sound different to "normal" speakers matching can be a problem.

I think the Mission FS2/AV center would do the job for you. It`s NXT, can be wall mounted (inc corners). It can be sat on the TV and it is small (w360 h140 d40mm). The only down side is that no NXT panel can be called guttsy as the sub is responcible for the mid-range and bass. Plus I will have to check if Mission sell them as a one off.

The M7 center from Mission could all so be a posibillity. For a "normal" center it is one of the smaller ones (h135 w500 d125).

Another one to look at is the B&W LCR 3 (h152 w481 d221). It` a bit more pricey but you get what you pay for.

I hope this is of some help,

All the best,

Andrew.

Right I have just spoke to Mission service and they were not to helpfull.

(mission) "We don`t sell them as a single item"

(me) "OK what if a coustemer wanted a spare for a dameged center?"

(mission) "We can do that"

(me) "So I can buy them as a single unit?"

(mission) "No...er...we would not recomend you buy them as a single unit as it may not match."

(me) "Yes I know and so does my client."

(mission) " I still would not recomend it."

The upshot of this is is that if you wanted the FS2/AV center you may be able to find a helpfull dealer how can get you one at a cost of about £120.

All the best,

Andrew.

Thanks for looking into that Andrew, food for thought. I`m still leaning towards the M7c1 at the moment.

I`ve got the M7C1 - it`s an excellent speaker - sounds great and looks subtle.
