How essential is HDMI on a HDD/DVD Recorder?

I`m still after a HDD/DVD recorder, and I`m just wondering how much essential an HDMI connection was? You can`t record through them, so I guess the only advantage is the upscaling, right?

HDMI is really only to enable and HD input.

As there are no devices yet capable of recording in HD (apart from Sky HD) I would not worry about it.

So even if I got a HDD recorder, with HDMI, it couldn`t record using HDMI anyway as the unit wouldn`t support HD recordings?

It may be more convenient to connect sound and (optimum) video through a single cable but that`s only for playback - for recording you will only be using the internal tuner or downsampled Sky HD through AV......

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Remember that to record in High Def would require a LOAD of hard drive space. That`s why blank HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs are like 30-50 GB in size. That is only enough to hold ONE MOVIE in High Def terms!!! So a 250 GB Hard drive would hold about 5 movies...(whereas in standard def, it holds hundreds of hours of recordings)

Stick with standard def for the time being! ;)

on .mkv files you can get very excellent quality @ around 8gb for an "average" 1hr30min movie, but of course thats just pc based at the moment ;)
