DAB+ ???

JamesW (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 13th March 2007, 08:47

Hi All,

I was reading a review of a new radio, which was apparently DAB+ capable. I hadn`t heard of DAB+ before, but a little research suggests that it`s a `higher quality` replacement for DAB - and out soon. But, this appears to mean that DAB broadcasts will be turned off sometime in the future?

Anyone know anything more?

Cheers.

James,

Only just read the thread, so you may have already found this page, which basically says that most present DAB radios will be superceeded by DAB+. It looks like it will take a while, but nobody is really shouting from the rooftops about it to let people know about the coming change or how their equipment will become useless >:(

If you are buring a digital radio, make sure it is DAB+ compatible. Otherwise you will be buying a lemon. I have 3 DAB radios which will be redunadant in a few years.

What with Sky moving the goalposts with DVB, this whole digital mullarky needs to be reviewed! >:(

There was a guy on Working Lunch the other week from the body responsible for DAB in the UK. They were asking this question, would all these DAB radios be useless once DAB+ comes out.

His answer was no, and not to worry. He said DAB+ is a globally agreed standard, but is not being implemented in the UK, ie: we`re sticking with DAB as it is now, so no compatability problems.

Actually, just did a bit more digging after posting that last reply, seems the guys on Working Lunch wasn`t telling the whole truth. See here.

Personally, I haven`t made the jump to DAB yet anyway, I can`t really see what people get so excited by with it, I mainly listen to radio at work, or in the car, and find nothing wrong with FM myself, clear sound, station name comes up etc with RDS.

From what I`ve read people say you still lose the signal, it just goes off completely, rather than crackly like FM does, same as the snowy picture versus broken up / lost picture with digital terrestrial tv really. Plus what about all those cars still with analogue radios in them (most)? Are they expecting people to all go out and buy new radios just because they turn the signal off. It should have had a lot more forward planning re the motor industry, they should have been fitting them as standard a number of years ago ready for the big switch off.

DAB radio is great. The main advantage for me is to get good clean sound on stations only normally available on AM. Talk Sport, Radio 5, Radio 5 +, Virgin, Old Gold & more.
