Amplifier/receiver

Mintguy2 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 15th November 2001, 20:49

I`ve got a Aiwa XR-DV370KN which i`m fairly happy with. The only problem with this machine is that it doesn`t have a 5.1 decoder. So I`m thinking of buying a new amplifier/receiver and using the optical cable from the DVD player.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what kind of Amplifier/Receiver I should get?

I`m not a HiFi freak, so I don`t want to spend more than £500, and I probably couldn`t justify more than £300 to the wife!

Any help appreciated!

No, don`t go TV - cost a small fortune.
Do you already have speakers?

Take a look at the link Chivalry gave - it gives the spec. and does say "...as well as Dolby Digital and DTS, the 595 is DVD-Audio ready." It`s got an RDS tuner as well.

It sure is tempting. Anyone got a recommendation for a good budget speaker package to go with it?

Tks,

Steve

Speakers - how about the Mission M72 pack (under £300 www.qed-uk.com), or make your own pack with the M73 or M74 floorstanders instead of the M72. Hifijunkies will pricematch qed, too, so if you do get the amp there....
Lower budget - you can get some 5+1 bundles from Richer Sounds or QED again - the Eltax get mixed reviews - you could also look at the Yamaha NSP220 (£139 at QED) - 5 satellites and a sub.
Amp wise you maybe ought to look at the Denon 1602/1802. Email hifijunkies and see what they reckon between those and the Onkyo. Can be a bit slow, but once you get in dialogue, they`re really helpful.
