Do DVD players in the UK play foreign VCD?
I know that they can play VCD, but not sure if they can play foreign VCD.
I brought loads of VCD from Hong Kong, I can play them on PC and Laptop. But I want to buy a DVD player. Not sure if I can test it at the shop.
If the answer is yes, I am unsure with the wording of S(VCD) in a catalogue, I would of though it means you can play SVCD and VCD? I guess its safer to buy a DVD player which state it can play VCD. Some DVD players in the catalogue just say they can play SVCD, and not VCD?
Also, is VCD just not written by accident? Shouldn`t all DVD players play VCD?
I seen a DVD player costing £100, and it doesn`t say it can play VCD, I also seen a DVD player for £25, and it says it can play VCD?
I also heard that any DVD player that can play DVD can play VCD?
Does anyone know?
Thanks

I agree with the above, I bought some VCDs in Hong Kong, and they have played in both cheap and expensive DVD players
I`m sure they are are region free.

Yes VCD and SVCD never had region coding.
Playback will depend on the player though.
Some older players won`t play them.
If you can`t check whether they work instore see if you can get a look at the manual which should clearly show all supported formats

Video CDs aren`t region coded but are system formatted according to location - ie PAL or NTSC
You therefore need to ensure your player and/or TV can cope with both.
I`ve not come across any machine that can play only SVCDs and not VCDs. it`s generally the other way round.
Most cheap end machines however can cope with nearly everything... it tends to be the more expensive DVD players that can`t play VCDs.

Some of the Alba,Goodmans & Bush brands don`t play VCDs.Go for a Philips 3005 or 3020 around £30,Plays everything.

I was going to get the Philips DVP 3020 for £32, its usually £40, but it was out of stock. I got the Toshiba SD-160.
It plays all the 7 VCDs and 2 DVDs I brought from Hong Kong. However, it didn`t play a DVD I brought from Hong Kong, its different to the other two I brought. I seen it already, its a boxset. I was wondering whether I can watch it using some sort of hack?
Is it safe? I am going to buy more DVDs from Hong Kong, so I guess not all of them will play?

Currys,Comet and Argos are still doing the 3020 for £29.99.I don`t think you can hack the Toshiba.Take it back if you can.
