How Reliable are Plasma and LCD TVs ???

sultan (Competent) posted this on Friday, 10th November 2006, 10:27

I`m thinking about buying my 1st Plasma or LCD TV.

Now, eBay isn`t the best place to buy such items but I couldn`t help notice the number of
LCD and Plasma TVs from well known brands which are up for sale as being faulty.

Faults being anything from
A) half the display doesn`t work.
B) Black lines across the Display
C) Display completly dead.
D) Display cracked.

So, my question is...how reliable and how fragile are these Plasma / LCD TV`s.
If I`m going to fork out 1.5K for a 32-42 incher, I need to be sure it will last reasonably long.

Taa for any info

Best advice I think is "get it from John Lewis".

They price match / free delivery (but installation is extra, if you need it) / free 5 year guarantee.

They are also superb if you have any problems.

I am going to stand up for my own lot here. (mods please feel free to remove) We have allways done free delivery (within reason) Set up is included (possibly the most important part) and we are starting to do 5 year thingys on a few makes. All though in the 6 years i have been selling plasma/lcd we have only had about 10 go wrong. We have had that in a year with CRT tv`s. I to am superb if anything goes wrong. I will come and pick the set up if it has to go away. (that is rare). Ok, said my piece. With regaurds to reliability I would say as a rule they are very reliable and tougher than people think. We move our sets off the shop floor every night with no probs.

I went to have a look at HI-DEF on a LG to see what all the fuss was about and the ptcture looked good but not quatum leap, what botherd me was most the HD demo was of a load of cats and when one jumped up on a table I noticed a time lag in the picture, now if that was on a CRT I would say it had a strange fault but on certain Plasma/ LCD its considerd the norm, the set was priced over a grand and for that money I would have thought they would have sorted this problem out. :/

I would realy like to see a HD demo on a few HD CRT TVs , I think it would look superb. :)

Brucey

I would love to have bought off you and have you come round and set it up. Unfortunately I live in Sheffield and the John Lewis Sammy deal was too good to pass up. At least I bought it from a high street retailer.

However, free set up advice gladly received :)

get j lewis to come round and do the job properly. If you are going to try and put yourself up as the standard, then do the job properly and fully. You can have that for free. Obviously I jest, but I get wicked off with the amount of people who come in having bought a tv else where and then wanting me to tell them how to set it up. They are most suprised when i want to charge them to tell them how.

I`d say LCD is the only way to go to be honest. Plasma has issues with screen retention which means I`d never think about getting one, EVER!

I`ve got a Samsung LCD and it`s superb. If you don`t live near a John Lewis, try Costco as they are usually closer to internet prices and you get a free 3 year guarantee.

I use my TV for DVDs and Xbox360 and it`s just brilliant, way better than CRT (although if you watch normal TV, CRT might be better depending how close you sit).
