OK - my Wharfedale 750s is screwed: they refuse to touch it and I will have to pay for repairs (I`m pretty sure its a transport problem). Considering its only just over a year since I got it and its already been replaced once I am not very impressed
So I am looking for advice for a good cheap player.. I am loathed to buy another box with the Wharfedale logo on it ... so I`m open to suggestions.
I`m not running a big / widescreen TV and dont have a surround sound system (my apartment is too small for that) so .....

Im pretty much like yourself when it comes to buying/selecting something new and at a low price. I have just bought the Cyber Home ADL528 DVD Player from Richer Sounds. This player is VERY GOOD!! For the money that is!!. £99.00 for a multi region player, which produces fantastic quality both in visual and audio. Build quality is ok too. The drive makes a little noise when inserted and a very quite rotaing noise when playing but nothing to be so concerned about. You can go to their website www.richersounds.com, but please bear in mind that the guys from the website are very slow at processing orders. So if you have a store nearby, to check this one out, go take a look! Stay away from the Daewoo and Scan`s players, the looks are ok but the quality of the AV is not so good.

Who refused to touch it?
When mine went wrong the other week I rang the helpline and they never even checked if it was under warranty, they got a local dealer to come round to my house and sort the problem.

Despite what some people may say the proline DVD2000 is a bloody good player for £120, Region hack, plays RCE etc etc.

I guess I got Jobsworth Junior on the phone - he wanted receipt details and then told me that as it was more than a year old it was not covered by them and I would have to phone the engineer directly and get him to come and look at it and I would pick up the bill... which given the sort of costs engineers charge would not be worth it.

Hi John,
Why do you say stay away from Scan`s players? All the reviews I`ve seen and people I`ve spoken to have been very much impressed with the SC-2000s picture and sound quality. As far as I`m aware the only problems anyone has encountered are born of dealing with Scan`s customer service. I am thinking of buying an SC-2000 quite soon on the strength of all this evidence, so if you have something to say about them I`d be interested to hear it!
