Videologic digitheatre - any good?

jboraston (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 23rd October 2000, 19:36

Dammit I`m bored with stereo.

I NEED 5.1 surround for my lovely DVD. Is the Digitheatre the cheapest half decent product?

Any ideas?

Can it be got anywhere other than thru Videologic? Anyone got one?

My player already has a Dolby Digital decoder in it - is there any nice cheap way of hooking it up direct to speakers??

Got one. For the money it`s fantastic value, it`ll rattle your teeth and make the floor shake, but if you want the neighbours to go clinically deaf too you may need something more powerful :-)
Seriously though, it`s more than adequate to fill a reasonable sized room, when we lived in a semi- I didn`t dare crank it up too high, for fear of complaints, but I know it`s not powerful enough for some folk.
My only complaint is the credit card sized remote, but I think you get a better one with the DTS version.
I believe you can get it from Comet.
The only way to go from your existing decoder would be if you have some old amps lying around. You could use your hifi for left and right front, your tv for centre channel, then you`d need two more amps(or more precisely, one and a half) one for rear left and right and one for a sub-woofer. Then you`d have to get them all balanced and pray your decoder has a master volume control. I do not recommend this route!

I agree with dave for the money it is outstanding value and quality and unless you plan to watch your movies at wembley stadium is a powerful system for any home cinema set up. I got mine at dixons 3 months ago for £250.00 it comes with all the speakers u need but i forked out an extra £60.00 @ argos for some decent stands (It was hard enough to convince the missus the digitheatre was an investment let alone riping the decor to s*** as well). Now i got the set up right i`ll probaly upgrade the amp to the dts version sometime next year.

BTW the missus would`nt live without it now either.

VideoLogic DD5.1 is da Bollox!!!
TOSH is da Bollox!!!

I got one back in June/July and it`s excellent. Does any mid-size room proud, and it has added a whole new dimension to my viewing experience. I got mine from gameplay.com, for £200. They still have them at that price as far as I know. Only took a couple of days to arrive too. I agree about the remote though, it`s too small. It also has a tendancy to lose your speaker presets if you put it in standby, but apart from that it`s great, sounds fantastic hooked up to my Tosh SD100.

I recently purchased the videologic digitheatre dts after much checking the unit out, and comparing it to its sister the digitheatre and i can tell you that it is well worth the 370 notes i paid for it,ok it is about 120-170 pounds more expensive than the digitheatre 5.1,but-and it is a big but you are getting the ability to decode the excellent dts region 1 soundtrack, the whole unit looks better and sounds better than its predecessor, and the remote is slightly better(ok so you are still gonna lose it down the back of the sofa)Dont be put of by the satellite speakers they can hold there own(with the volume at halfway it rocks)and the glorious sub growls away in the corner with a total output of 175w rms it is the perfect finale to any home cinema set up check out videologics website for reviews,i bought mine at www.dvdworld at the reasonable price of 370 pounds-buy one.
