hitachi c24w430n - any good?

richfin (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 27th October 2001, 11:56

Does anyone know if this TV can accept an s-video signal?
What viewing modes does it have (16:9, 4:3, 14:9, zoom, 4:3 expand?) Would you recommend this TV for around £320?

any info appreciated.

Personally I would try and stretch to a 28", unless space means that 24" is the only size that fits.... MIght be a bit tight on that budget, though, unless you go Bush/Goodmans - if you can get to a Makro, they can be had for much less than your budget. Viewing modes might be a bit limited on thses sets, though - difficult to find decent info out about them. Unbeatable have a Tosh 28W93B for £400 odd (once delivery has been added) - I know it`s over the budget, but it might be worth holding back.

I went to looks at TV`s today and 24" is too small, especially when displaying 4:3 images. I was looking at that Tosh for £380ish which seems good for the money.

In reply to the guy`s actual question........
Yes, the Hitachi does accept an S-VHS signal in it`s AV2 scart. RGB on scart 1. You can therefore have SKY into AV1 ( RGB ) and your DVD into AV2 ( S-VHS ), thereby getting lovely direct connections and lovely picture quality on both. I`m assuming you have SKY here, and I`m also assuming you watch more SKY than DVD. If you don`t have SKY then just connect the DVD to AV1 and use RGB.
It also does all the screen types you mentioned, but you only ever need to do is set it on ` auto ` . You need never ever change it from that. Cheaper sets with 16:9 only SUCK !!! Squashed picture or what ??!!!
I`ve got the C28W511TN and it`s great. No complaints for a sub £500 tv.
Cheers

Sorry, Bowf, I was responding to the last bit - "would you recommend"...
Found a review of that Toshiba http://www.homecinemachoice.com/testbench/Televisions/Toshiba/Toshiba28W93B_2.shtml - looks like it doesn`t autoformat, which is a pain...
That review also looks at some other 28" widescreens - might be worth looking at...

As long as Sanyo doesn`t come into the running. The first widescreen I bought was a Sanyo 28" with their 3D sound. One of their series with metal or something in the name.
Got it home and watched it for 2 weeks before deciding there was something decidedly ` odd ` going on with the picture. My ignorance of widescreen picture quality resulted in me watching 10 foot tall football players and a tall, and thin, Dawn French...
Turned out that the engineer knew exactly what was wrong as soon as he came round. Apparently Sanyo had a problem with the ` auto ` format which meant the picture was staying too ` tall ` and not switching down. The shocking bit was that, according to him, Sanyo KNEW loads of their TV`s were doing this but decided to wait until folk complained....
Needless to say Sanyo is blacklisted in our house.

There is a way to get this TV for as little as £360-odd delivered, but it`s not TOTALLY straight-forward (altho` it only takes approx 10 mins). www.storeplus.co.uk have this TV for £420 delivered. However, if you were to sign-up for your own FREE storeplus internet shop, you can qualify for commission/discount on any sales/purchases. The deal is that they will pay up to 75% of the profit margin in commission. Definitely worth thinking about. ;-)

Thanks for the info but I will probably get the Tosh 28W93B for £380 from Index as my sister works there. It is also easy to take things back. I actually made a profit when I took my old hi-fi back because the person working there forgot to take account of the staff discount!
