prologic/dts amps and and fearful of the wife

Bluenose (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 18th October 2001, 21:10

I am hoping to purchase a dts amp for my cyberhome adm512 dvd player.
This is currently connected (dvd player) to my Grundig 28w tellie. My tv is prologic but I can only get prologic from my dvd player using it hence the digital amp. I am hoping to connect my tv through the amp thus getting rid of the extra speakers as they come with the amp. My question is this. If I connect the tv to the amp (sony htk 215 poss) could my wife still watch/listen to the tellie without using the amp ? I also listen to Digital radio via sky and mp3/cds from my dvd player but as I have them connected via the tv I have to keep the tv on which is annoying (well for the wife anyway) Am I right in thinking that if I connect both sky and dvd/mp3 player to the amp then I could turn the tv off ?

Final question really , if i did buy the sony htk 215 could I use my 100watt speakers on it or would I blow the amp?

OK, I`m not familiar with the spec` of the Sony, but my comments should apply - it is after all a reputable make!

1. As long as your telly has line-outs for stereo sound (it should have), you will be able to connect these to a spare input pair on the Sony. On my Yamaha, I`ve got my telly connected to the DTV sockets. This also means that even if you don`t use the amp, any "TV sound" (including VCR, DVD downmixed, etc) will work.

2. Use your TV`s Dolby set up to switch prologic off - i.e. select normal stereo. Now, remove your rear speakers. Even if you use the TV sound (as you suggest your wife will want to), you won`t run any risk of damaging the output stages of your TV`s rear speaker amplifier (although modern designs are generally OK anyway).

3. To use the Sony, turn the TV volume all the way down (or mute it).

4. Connect your other sources to your Sony.

5. Speakers don`t blow amps (usually!). It`s the other way round. Ideally, you need speakers with match characteristics for all 5 (6) channels - senistivity, impedance and most importantly phase. Any speakers place within a couple of feet of the TV need to be shielded or you will distort the picture on the TV. Specialist AV speakers are - yours may not be.

My tv does not have phono line outs I am afraid, but I do have a scart socket adapter which has a two way switch and goes scart to phono will this do? My tv has two scarts on it one to video and one to the sky box, will I need a scart switcher as I will need to connet sky and my video to the tv as well , the speakers that i use at the moment are right next to yhe tv and no picture distortion.

It sounds like you`ll need something like the SL14A from http://www.lektropacks.co.uk/acatalog/Lektropacks_Online_Standard_Series_27.html - but there are probably others available. Are you SURE you don`t have audio out on your TV? My Tosh didn`t have it in the manual, but after I`d ferreted around the back I found them hiding by the AV channel 3 S-Video connector.

Your adapter thingy may also do the trick! Suck it and see.
