LCD TVs

Richard Webb (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 20th July 2006, 11:31

:/ I have not kept up with the TV market and am now wanting to buy a 32 or 37 inch LCD TV. Does anyone have any advice on which are the best. I am looking to pay up to £1500, and would like it to be HD ready and have an integrated Freeview decoder.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks for the reply......I will give it a look

I guess this is a "how long is a piece of string" type of question, but are there some makes and models that much better than the rest?

Thanks again

With LCD the responce time is important. This is how quickly the crystals can stan up and lay down. The lower the Milli second "MS" the better. 8MS is very good. 16MS is twice as long so not as good.

Contrast ratio is next. With this the higher the number the better. 800:1 not good. 5000:1 very good. Unfortunatly not every one uses the same system.

With the money at your disposal I would say you could not go wrong with the Samsung 74 range or the Panasonic LXD60 stuff. They are both at the top of thier games at the mo.

hi Dr 42%er

what`s your take on the samsung`s contrast ratio of 5000:1 vs the panasonic`s 1200:1? Is there a noticeable difference between the two (it`s quite difficult to find two equally set up lcds round my way).

thanks

Samsung call it Dynamic contrast ratio. This leads me to belive it is there own system. Mind you, Pana plasmas used to have a dubious contrast reading. You will struggle to see a differance. If I was buying today I would by the Samsung. Proberbly down to looks though.

Just bought a Sammy R74 32" and the picture looks great on analogue Freeview and digital cable. Not tried my DVD yet but, so far, my missus and me are impressed.

The sound is not great but, these days, most people have their tellies via amps.

thanks for your thoughts dr 42%er. although i`m still undecided between the 2 sets, the 2xhdmi on the panasonic might swing it. can`t understand why samsung didn`t do the same - with their pricepoint/looks and performance, it would have been an automatic choice for anyone buying a 32in tv.

cheers

That is the major down side but soon most amps will have HDMI switching anyway.

I don`t have anything with a HDMI output and probably won`t for the forseeable future so it wasn`t really a concern for me.
